Babies: 9 - 12 Months

the secret to potty training...

buy one now and make it available after baths.

pt-ing was uneventful and mostly done by 2 y.o. (even w/ bringing a new baby home)   because we kept it available and didn't make it a big deal.  Except when she actually used the potty, then we went crazy with praise.  People on the 24 months plus are a little too late for this advice, so thought I'd share what worked for us and what friends have said was the most helpful for them too!

Re: the secret to potty training...

  • So you just bought one and left it out in the bathroom for your LO? At what age did you start doing this? Thanks for posting!

  • I bought it at about 9 months and decided to set it next to the tub, she went potty the first time at about 10 months, but it was just a fun- get used to it time.  She would sit on it if she wanted, but if she didn't- we wouldn't try.  She got more interested around 18 months and would go potty several times a day.  She wasn't interested in it for a while when baby came home( about 20 months old), but a couple months after, she wanted to go a lot and I had the energy back to try days w/ no diapers and she did great.  She's still doing diapers at night, but I'm loving mostly only buying diapers for one kiddo! :-)

I totally agree with this and did the same thing with DS. Only we got ours when he was about 18 months and he started wanting to use it a couple months later.

He's in underwear when he's awake for us too. I'm not very concerned about night training at this point since he always wakes up soaked.

  • yeah DS1 was daytime potty trained at 19/20 months.  About 6 week before DS2 came home.  He did great but my trick was to catch him when he peed at bathtime.  I don't know if it's a boy thing but my goodness as soon as I would but him in the tub and the water was running, he peed.  I totally hyped it up and he thought it was the best thing ever.  Now I have to remind him to go before he gets in the tub cause he still wants to do that.  Once he connected that feeling the rest of pt was a cinch.  He was night trained about 4 month ago.  To the point that if I put a pull up on him will use it and if I put him in big boy pants he wakes up, then wakes me up and I tell him to go and he goes.  Now I have to gear up in a couple of months to do this all over again.

  • Wow, thats a great idea. Someone got us a potty at our baby shower and its been collecting dust since then in DDs closet. She always toddles around the bath room naked while I clean up after the bath and about half of the time pees on the towel laying on the floor anyways. It couldn't hurt to sit the potty out and let her play with it (its a musical potty). Thanks for the idea!
