Health insurance for your baby

I just found out that it's almost $700/month to add our baby to my health insurance plan!  For real? Indifferent

Anybody done the research to see what theirs costs yet?

DH is going to call his HR department tomorrow to see what his costs. We thought mine would be less expensive, but now we hope his is!

Re: Health insurance for your baby

  • Ours will not change. It is through DH's work and you only have the option for single or family, a married couple is considered a family. With family it doesn't matter how many people are on it and it will stay the same. We currently have me and DS on it so we just have to add this LO when s/he gets here.

    same for us

  • Yikes - that seems crazy expensive! For DS it was around an additional $150 a month and luckily now it doesn't matter how many kids I add it stays the same. I hope you find a better deal through your DH - good luck!

This is us too.  I only have single or family option and DH and I are already considered family.  I'm sorry yours is so much.  I hope it is cheaper on your husbands.  Good luck!

  • wow, that stinks...sorry to hear that. =(

I have coverage through DH and he doesn't pay out of pocket for coverage, so it won't cost us anything under his family plan.

  • After adding my DH last year after we got married, mine stays the same.  It's the same after adding 2+ people (spouse/kids) and myself and since I have DH and DS on, it should be the same no matter how many kids I have.  For now, until they decide to change that.

  • I have wonderful insurance and I'm able to add dependents for free :)
  • Ours will not change either as we already have a family policy through my employer.
  • Ours goes up $100 a mo. Sad thing is, DH works for the company!  Such is life, I suppose.
  • Mine will go up by $300/month for adding baby.  It would have been an extra $200 but all of our rates just went up because of the health care bill.  On the same note my out-of-pocket max would have been $1500 if I delivered last year, now it's up to $3000.  Thanks a lot.

  • If I would've gone through my husbands work it would've cost nearly $600 a month (crazy). Through my work it's $233 a month, and my work will cover a bit...or I can forgo my percentage raise this year and they will cover it (still in negotiations). They said that it will be $233 even if I have another, so I'm guessing that means family plan....hmm, wonder if I switch hubs over if he'd get a bump in pay...I'll have to look into that.

  • Wow, what a shock! Do you have really comprehensive insurance with low copays and low/no deductible? I think that comparing at both companies is a great idea. Also, you could look into an individual plan for baby.

We found out insurance costs before TTC so we could factor that into our budget. Of course, that was two years ago and things can change but I am so, so lucky that my company will cover LO's policy at 100%. DH's company would not cover LO at all, and we would have to pay 100%.

  • Wow, that's insane. I really hope your husband's has a lower rate.

DH and I are on our own respective insurances and it's cheaper to add her to mine (around $40/month of pre-tax dollars).

Same here. I actually don't pay for insurance yet (we will with our next contract in 2 years though). That's a lot of money a month!!
