Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how to host a virtual baby shower??

My sister is pregnant and I would like to throw her a virtual shower. Ideally everyone would be able to see one another and second best would be for everyone to see just her and there be a virtual chat going on. Does anyone know any good websites for doing something like this? And yes, I am googling this also.

Re: how to host a virtual baby shower??

  • Does your sister not live in the same town as you?  Would the guests be all over the country or would most of them be concentrated in one town?  Because really, the idea of a virtual shower seems a little gift grabby - like you want the gifts for your sister but don't want to have the actual party.  It might not come across as well as you'd like it to.

She lives 9 hours away from me and he friends are all around the country. This has nothing to do with me not wanting to have the actual party. I don't agree that it is gift grabby because in actuality, I feel that her friends who don't see her a lot would love the excuse to see her virtually since they cannot in person.

About the skype, is there a way that you can have multiple people at once talk to each other?

  • Totally skype! ETA- ugh forgot about the multiple person thing. I haven't figured out if you can do that... there has to be some sort of webhosting thing you could do where at least ppl could see her, I would think...

We did a virtual shower years ago for a friend who was stuck on bedrest a 6 hr drive from where her shower was supposed to be but no one had webcams then so we did it on a conference call & she described all the gifts & her husband took a couple pictures to email out afterward. I sent him a box of 'decorations' which was basically a tablecloth, baby shower confetti & some other little things & he was in charge of arranging all the gifts on the table that day- he also put everything aside when it came so she didn't see much of it.

And to the pp who says it is gift grabby, I think it is safe to assume you're not doing a virtual shower for someone who lives nearby or could do a 'live' shower. Seriously.

In this case it sounds like a cute idea.  In addition to the technical issues, try to figure out how to make it as much like a "shower" as possible (ship gifts by x date, etc.).  I have no idea how to make it work - but if you do it right, it could be really cute.

Your ideas sound cute and as far as your assumption - I never assume anything on The Bump.  Having never heard of a virtual shower before, it seemed gift grabby.  Because part of the fun of a shower is the party.  Once explained, it makes a little more sense.

Exactly?this is what I'm looking into. Hmm, I'll figure it out. Just wanted to know if anyone "definitely knew" of something off the top of their head.

    Thanks though

Yes true to not assume on here but the question was how to do it, not do you think it is a good idea...thats all.

  • Hi again!

just checked my skype menu & there is definitely a conference call option where you check everyone you want called on it. How this actually plays out on the screen is beyond me, you might want to gather a few friends who have it & test it, since it is free & everything.  It says it can accommodate up to 24 ppl.

  • Maybe Web Ex? Or ooVoo?

Yeah, I'm looking at that as well, but I don't think you can video with more than one person (still looking into it though). I would love if, at a minimum, she could be seen and maybe the rest of us on a live chat. I don't know? just trying to find something that would not be too confusing for people.

  • ??? who knows how it is...
