so this question may be totally silly... but i've been trying to avoid artificial sweeteners since i got pregnant. what are everyone's thoughts on chewing gum -- okay, or no? i'm one of the lucky ones that gets that horrible sour taste in my mouth after eating... and nothing really gets rid of except chewing a piece of gum (brushing my teeth only works for a few minutes, then it's back again) literally every kind of gum i've found has aspartame in it.... grah!
all that said, i'm chewing some now anyway... it's the only way i'll make it through the rest of the day at work.

This.
LMAO. Yes.
I know the exact taste you are talking about and also have befriended any gum that is available after eating. I have noticed now, though, that I mostly get the after taste after eating anything sweet - artificially or not. Luckily, gum still solves my problem.
If you're that concerned I would ask your doc, but really, it's a stick of gum. I doubt there's enough of anything to do any harm. Have you looked into kids gums...like the bubblicious kind of stuff?
I've never eaten artificial sweeteners...grew up without them. I'm a label reader and work in pharma...I know what companies go through to make everything look safe. Not a lot of research has been done on some of these substances, and what is known is usually neg. so I stay away from all of them. Stevia isn't even approved to be used the way it is, splenda may be "from natural sources" (and contains chlorocarbons) but then nutrasweet is from asparagus and it is a neurotoxic carcinogen, saccharin crosses the placenta....they'll find out more in 10 years. Of course moderation is key, but I avoid them all. People ridicule me or call me a dirty hippie, health nut, eco-freak...but I really don't care what they say; I'm not putting that carp in my body or into my baby.
I find that dried pineapples get rid of after taste problems - and they are pretty chewy
I bet dried ginger would be good too if you like spicy foods- I also found a sulfur compund/ gelatin free chewy ginger candy thats good ...by Reeds.
