anyone have insight? re: puking

Andrew has had 2 puking episodes in the last couple of months.  Both times teething, both times before he got a cold. He just got over a cold though.

He woke up last night and randomly puked.  After that I layed him in his bed 5 minutes later awake and he went right to sleep.  Almost like he woke up just to puke.  We're trying to get him healthy so he hasn't really been around anyone sick that we know of - not that you can keep him away from germs entirely, but stil.

I keep thinking he's just gagging.

Do you think it's reasonable that he could be gagging and/or just nauseous from teething drainage?

My other thought is that it could be his reflux acting up. I'm pretty sure it's one of those two things happening.

I feel so lost. He's having a *lot* of night awakenings. He's settling down on his own very quickly (2-10 minutes usually), but I don't understand why he keeps puking and waking up so frequently.  I'm pretty sure he's not puking from being upset.

Previously I'd go in to see him and he'd immediately burp and fall back asleep. I keep saying "he's so burpy" but that stil could be teething or reflux. We want him to do this on his own though.

He also acts super thirsty but won't drink - but that could be from teething or reflux too. :/

Yes, IMO it is entirely reasonable for him to gag from drainage/reflux to the point where it causes him to throw up.  Especially if he is lying down.

And YES, it is totally normal for toddlers to wake a LOT at night, but it is great that he is able to get himself settled right back down.  That's good parenting on your part, that is the part that most LOs find the hardest to learn if they are having sleep issues.

Even when DS is symptom-free and having a great night's sleep, he will wake maybe 4-6 times in the night.  Sometimes he talks to himself, sometimes he coughs, sometimes he repositions, etc.  Totally normal.  And if we are lucky, he gets himself back to sleep without us.

It's frustrating, because I wake up, as well (and even more frustrating for you if you're having to wake up and clean up the vomit), but if the teeth come through, the reflux improves, or the cold runs its course, I think everything else is pretty normal.

Do you think that is different for toddlers vs. infants?

He used to wake up sometimes as an infant, but not as often, and he wasn't upset except for when he was newborn and his reflux was out of control. He also woke up in the mornings happy.

Now he usually wakes up crying almost like panicking he has to burp, not always though like this morning he didn't even make a sound when he woke up and was just chillin in his crib. :)

I feel so bad when he woke up and just puked and then was fine!  Doh!  I'm hoping it was a fluke thing and we'll see how he does tonight. We've also been playing with his eryped dosage and missed 2 doses in a row (couldn't make it back from vacation in time before the pharmacy closed :( ) so that could be it.

Anyways, thanks.  Just rambling now but I appreciate your thoughts.

I just don't want to ignore a problem (if he's outgrowing his reflux meds for example) if I shouldn't be.  It's probably just something normal like gagging on teething drainage.

  • So sorry you're still struggling with this stuff.

For what it's worth: Both kids randomly wake up and go back to sleep.  And DH gags/pukes when he gets alot of drainage (so from a cold/allergies -teething in A's case) He sometimes says he feels like there's a mucus pit in his stomach when he's got it really bad.  Kaylee's been working on her molars for a month now and randomly gets a runny nose with some drool.

It's probably all related - and fairly normal. A's reflux probably just makes it a little tougher on him.  It's virtually impossible to have a toddler sleep on an incline so that "solution" won't help you.    Maybe a humidifier in his room? Mucinex? (i know they make children's mucinex - your dr would have to give you A's dosage)

  • Thanks for the insight. I've never really experienced nausea other than the flu so it's hard for me to relate.  That does seem like the issue.

We do have his bed raised and he surprisingly always stays put and with his head on the highest spot. :) Funny huh?!

We should try running the humidifer again - we stopped recently.

I'm recluctant to try another medicine (It may come to that) as he's already so so doped up on so much medicine.  Speaking of that, maybe the Omnicef is upsetting his stomach too.

I feel like I'm going around and around with this, haha.

    Thank you.

Ooh, try the humidifier and see if that works!  And we have the electronic snot sucker that we used for DS when his snot got out of control.  We used the nasal saline mist for babies, waiting a minute or two for it to work, and then sucked out the snot right before bedtime.   Between that and the humidifier, it worked pretty well.

I agree that I think his past issues with reflux are making a normal problem worse, but I do think it sounds normal, especially if it has been just a couple of times.  He's been gagging a lot lately, and if something is in his throat, it just makes sense that he gets it out of there.

We actually have let DS have a pillow in his crib (SHOCKING, I know).  But he has done extremely well with it.  It's an adult sized one that takes up the entire end, and it's very firm (but pretty flat).  It is rare that he sleep without having his head on the pillow.  I think that is one of the things that has helped us to get him to STTN.  I'm sure everyone on the board remembers our long fought struggle to get DS to SLEEP!

Good luck.  Let us know how things are going.  Sometimes it just helps to get it off your chest!

  • we got one of those electronic snot suckers per Brenda's rec! It works great and really helped!
  • My pregnancy caused acid reflux makes me puke some mornings.
