Choosing a name

We are having the hardest time trying to figure out what we are going to name our little guy. We have 15 names on the list and 10 weeks to go. That is, if I make it to the end. We like the names on our list but nothing is jumping out at us as "THE NAME"

Is this normal?

Re: Choosing a name

  • This time we had the big list too that we couldn't narrow so DH and I made our own lists and saw what lined up.  We didn't talk about them, just said...ok, you pick your top 5 and I'll pick mine.  Anything that didn't line up we tossed immediately...that got it down to 3-4 names.  We ended up using 2 of the 4 names for DD.

  • we were that way. addison was the only name we agreed on. i wish i had one that really stuck out to me, but we didn't. we're both happy with her name now.

although lately she's been telling us her name is Annie.

  • Sometimes you just have to wait until the baby is born and "feel" what the right fit is.  They won't ask you for the name until a day or two afterwards so maybe you can wait until he comes!

  • We went to the hospital with a list for Marion and she was a few hours old before we named her.  We're doing the same with this one, although we are much more in agreement on "the name" this time around than we were with Marion.
  • We got ours down to 5 names.  We had the middle name picked out and DH printed out a page with all 5 full names that we'd stare at and see which one "looked" best.

Any name that either of us was having any reservation about got tossed and we just ended up on Cason.

We also tried each name in practice... how it would sound when we were saying it in various situations (angry full name usage, cheering him on in sports, etc).

Another thing we did was went on the census website and saw what ranking each name had in popularity.  We had various reasons for doing this beyond not wanting a too popular name, but maybe that will help you.

for some reason the mental image of this is you two sitting alone in the bleachers yelling random names towards an empty field. it made me laugh, it's a good idea though!

maybe because people say "the backdoor test" where they picture themselves yelling it out the backdoor.

  • We narrowed our lists of names down to 2 if we were having a boy.  I wouldn't have decided for sure until the baby was born.
  • We were both on the same page when we named our daughter and had no conflict at all as we both knew it was the perfect name for her.  However, we've had a much harder time choosing a name for our son.  We went through several months of not having any ideas until I came up with one I really fell in love with.  My husband's not convinced it's the right name and he's found another that he likes that I'm unsure of.  So, I might be spending the next 15 weeks convincing him to like my name choice!

    It is hard!

  • Cameron didn't have a name for the first day.  Of course, the fact that he came 3 weeks early (and we hadn't narrowed our boy/girl name lists down yet) definitely contributed to that.

  • We had several picked out but we waited till the day after she was born to choose. We were torn before we "met" her but once we did it was easy.

I wouldn't have been surprised if my DH suggested this...  God help this kid if he doesn't like sports!

  • We just narrowed down to our final 2 boy names about 2 weeks ago, and won't make a "final" decision until baby is born (if the baby is a boy.)  The final 2 were just on my OK list, but over time, have really grown on me--to the point I KNOW one of them will be the right one.
