Potty Training

What are you ladies planning to do? Are doing? I was thinking of getting Ashton one of those seats that fit onto the regular toilet seat instead of a potty chair. I am thinking it will be easier to go straight to the real toilet instead of transitioning from the potty chair to the regular toilet?

Any thoughts?

Re: Potty Training

  • I was thinking a potty chair because then we wouldn't have the issue of him climbing to get onto the toilet?  But then again, it seems like it would be nice to have one of the ones that the seat comes off and also fits on the regular toilet to transition.

haven't done much research on it yet, but that's what I'm thinking.

  • i plan to do the toilet seat insert too - the cushie tushie seems to get good reviews in baby bargains.  i really don't want to deal with cleaning out a plastic potty.  we'll just get a little step stool for her and make sure we are always there when she uses it at the beginning to avoid any slips/falls

i was really skeptical and didn't think we could do it when lori posted about elimination communication but we started doing it about a month ago and so far it has been a huge success! i am so glad that i gave it a try! i was dreading having to "dunk and swish" poopy cloth diapers while at my parents' b/c i didn't have room to bring the diaper sprayer w/us...but we have been here for almost 3 wks and i have only had to deal with 4 poopy diapers!! the rest have all done down the potty! :) she does not go diaper free at any point in time, i simply put her on the potty before a nap and right when she wakes up from a nap (when i am already changing her diaper anyway).  it's amazing! she started to form an association between the toilet and going pee/poo after just a few days

  • i thought about doing that too, but I just don't spend enough time with him and DH wouldn't do it.  yay for miss A though!

you should totally do it.  you can do it as little or as much as you want. there are some days i hardly do it at all and i don't think she 'regresses' or anything :)

  • As Jaime wrote, we started infant pottying last month (aka Elimination Communication)...it's been VERY successful and quite quickly, actually.  She never goes diaper free, but we rarely change a poop diaper these days (whew!  just in time for introducing solids...) and she'll do it with a smile on her face for me, daddy and grandma too.  We're all fairy adept at reading her cues and she genuinely seems to enjoy being able to go on the potty rather than in her diaper.

We have a Munchkin Deluxe Potty Seat ($3 at Target, although I think they were mis-marked because now they're like $20!  Ours is white with blue handles) as well as Bjorn Little Potty Seat (we got a yellow one for $9 from babycatalog.com).  We also have a Cushie Tushie travel seat, $8 from babycatalog.com and will use it next month when we head to CA for a week.  We use the Munchkin seat mostly, especially for poops, since it's SO much easier to just flush once she's done.  I did read recently though that it's better for baby to have his/her feet on the floor for pooping since it means less straining.  But for now, she's not straining since she's still EBF, but once solids start full on (she's had her first tastes of banana, yogurt and hummus over the weekend) we may need to rethink it.

The Bjorn is handy for when we're in her room and doing diaper changes and she's dry since getting her to the bathroom she might pee on us and we can just let her pee in the potty in her room.  It's easy to rinse and the perfect size for her.

Since we've started ECing we only change an occassional poopy diaper (she usually goes once a day, in the late afternoons and it's really easy to read her cues) and offer "pottytunities" at every diaper change, before naps and after, before bath and after, etc.  She's been waking from her naps dry and then pees on the potty...it's so cute and she likes it.  We shall see if she can keep it up...it's a no stress approach...if she goes in the potty we are excited for her but there's no pressure, etc.  We CD and she HATES to be wet so I think she's learning that going on the potty means no wet diaper.

We got a potty chair already but we won't be using it anytime soon. I got it mainly because I think it'll be easier to manage with little boys. Also, we only have one bathroom right now and I'm not sure we want to deal with taking the insert off and on all the time, but those two reasons were just what I had in mind at the time that I bought it.

me too!  I remember babysitting for my (very younger) cousin and rinsing the catch bowl. yuck.

We have newer, high toilets (sometimes I feel like I'm falling onto friends' toilets that are the old school low ones) so a stepstool will be necessary, I like the dual level wooden ones that can be used get to help LOs get up to the sink too.
