This past weds. i went in for a cervical check. I have been going to a MFM group due to having PTL with my daughter. Well my cervix shortened quite a bit (it went from 3.5 to 2.2 for anyone who knows measurements).
Since father's day i have been feeling crampy and not myself. I think everyone just chalked it up to dehydration and the heat. I did go to an OB appt. the day after and i was fine at that point.
The MFM group did not recommend anything differently, just to come back in a week instead of 2 for another check. I was a little put off by this and unnerved. They said studies show bedrest doesnt do anything--however, i have a very on your feet type of job. I figured i would get a second opinion by my OB this monday and put myself on bedrest this weekend. I know that from experiences i have seen on SAIF, bedrest seemed to help quite a few people.
Well early Sat. am i started having cramping--longer and more persistent than what i was used to. I told my DH that i was going to call and go to L&D to reassure my hypochondriac self. We got there and at first the monitor was only picking up irritability. However, i was a finger tip dilated and 50% effaced so my OB suggested we start mag to knock out the irritability. As i was on the Mag, I started having mild contractions. That coupled with a positive FFN bought me an ambulance ride to a nearby hospital that has a micropreemie nicu.
By the time i reached the high risk ward of the hospital, my contractions increased to every 1-2 minutes and i could feel them pretty intensely. I thought this was it.
Fortunately the Mag kicked in and worked! I have been off of it now for over 12 hours and contraction free. My cervical dilation hasn't changed and they said that could actually be normal for someone who has had a child. I am still very thin and they will do another measurement tomorrow. I am out of the high risk ward and in a normal room for a few days or weeks or who knows depending on how things turn out.
My moral of the story is that you are your biggest advocate! I have learned a lot through these boards and feel free to page me if you want clarification on any of my numbers or tests.....i know that i had no idea on half the stuff until i started having issues and researching myself and listening to others experiences.
I don't want to say that my MFM doc was a schmuck, i just think that everyone's body and situation is different, and studies don't account for that! My OB agreed 100% that he thinks bedrest works too despite studies. I think you have to trust your mommy intuition and go with your gut! These little ones cost us a lot of work and grief to get and they deserve the best possible chance!
Hopefully things will stay calm for me and we caught everything early!

I am so glad you trusted your instincts!!
Hang in there baby!
I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I was on bed rest for incompetent cervix for 4 months with my last pregnancy, and I had a cerclage. It was frustrating, and I want to try to do everything in my power to avoid it this time, but at the end of the day if bed rest is your last resort you take it. I know what the studies say, but I'm not willing to go about my daily business like nothing is wrong when my pregnancy is at risk!
I was hosptialized twice, but never got to the point of needing mag. I know that it's miserable, but thank goodness it's doing it's job. The +FFN is scary, but I also was part of an online group of women with IC and a + didn't always lead to delivery within the next 2 wks, so try not to worry.
Every day is a challenge when you're on bed rest (especially in the hosptial, and without your child which I just can't imagine), but also an accomplishment. Hang in there and take it a day at a time. Try to keep a routine -- that helped me. I'm no expert, but feel free to page me if you have any questions and keep updating!
I am so sorry you are in the hospital on bedrest, but happy to hear things have calmed down.
My best friend had her DD at 26 weeks and when I took her to our local hospital in early labour they did not take us seriously. I demanded they do something. Long story short, by the time they got her to the high sick hospital the next day she was 7cm dialated. Baby came a couple days later.
I hope your little one stays put for a long time!
