MDO schedule and nap question

Mathis still takes 2 naps a day and, frankly, it's making it hard to do anything. I especially feel bad for Truitt, who suffers due to the restricted schedule. Mathis STTN most nights, even when his daytime routine has been disrupted (like when we were OOT for the 4th) so I think I might try to manipulate his schedule a little. I know if he was starting MDO now, they would only do one nap so I am thinking of trying a sort of MDO type schedule at home and then he'llbe ready when he starts in a couple of months. Just want to see what you all think of this idea and also what your MDO's schedules are to formulate a plan. TIA

Re: MDO schedule and nap question

  • I say go for it. Kendall dropped to only 1 nap at like 8 months. (though the one nap was like 3 hrs). In fact, she still naps most days.

  • You should be able to do it, but you'll likely need to put him down earlier in the evenings. Daycare forced Grant to go to 1 nap at 12 months and he was so not ready, he was going to bed at like 6:45 for a few months afterwards.

  • Definitely try it out and maybe pick the middle time between his 1st and 2nd nap as the ONE nap time.  If after a few days, he's having meltdowns every evening, then you may need to add a catnap in.

Ugh. He is such a sleeper.

He wakes up at 6-6:30 (up from 5, thank goodness)

Down for morning nap at 8:30-9 and sleeps until 10 or even 11 some days

    Up, play, eat lunch

Down again at 1:30-2. If he goes down closer to 2, he'll sleep until 3:30-4 ish

Then down for the night between 6:30-7:30, depending on how long his afternoon nap was

It's a lot of sleep... I am actually going to make another post about my concern here...

I just can't imagine putting him to bed much earlier...

Based on this schedule if you put him down at 12:00 (11:30 if he just can't make it) I bet he'd sleep until 3:00.  It looks like he's getting 3 hours total between the two naps.

We have the opposite issue.  We moved Calla to one nap before she turned 1 because it fit better with our schedule at home.  However, our daycare still gives her 2 naps during the week because it fits better with their schedule.  I have a harder time getting her to go to bed during the week because of the two naps.

  • Also, I don't think that's too much sleep.  When O was younger he had the same bed time/wake up schedule and took a solid 3 hour nap during the day.

Really? OK, this makes me feel a little better. *ALL* of Mathis's playgroup friends are down to one nap and he still takes 2 2hour naps daily, so it has me a little concerned. He also has this insatiable thirst. Those 2 together make me worry about diabetes. My fil has type 1, so it is a concern for us.

Lila will take a morning nap if we let her...  However we push it.  This is going to sound awful, but I NEED both kids to nap at the same time.  She naps from about 12-2 (same as MDO) and goes to bed between 7-7:30 and sleeps until 7:30-8.....
  • Joe went to  nap around 11-12 months. He would sleep from 8pm to 7:45am and nap from 12:30 to 3:30....so I think Mathis is right in line with that.

  • How old is he?  My son was on a similar schedule until almost 18(!!!) months.  Some little ones just need a whole lot of sleep.
