Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Unswaddling/paci weaning the same night

OK, tonight starts Operation Peace-Out Paci for my 4-month-old. She's having too much trouble getting and staying asleep at night and is simply too attached to that paci.

Anyway, I don't want to take it away without giving her a hand to suck if she wants, so I was thinking of also unswaddling one arm tonight as well.

Is it too shocking to the system to take away the paci and partially unswaddle her at the same time?

FYI: I plan on basically doing the Ferber method, so I'm not going to let her CIO.

imo giving her a hand out to suck will just keep her in the habit of sucking... and its very hard to swaddle one hand in one out...

  • We just took the paci away and stopped swaddling last week. Jayce is 4 and 1/2 months old. The first night our DS slept so much better and that has continued. He now wakes up once to eat, and sometimes doesn't even do that. We had been swaddling one arm in one arm out for a month prior. The hardest part has been naps more than nighttime sleep. We tried the Ferber method and didn't have a lot of success. Our son would just get himself so worked up he couldn't calm himself back down. Now we rock him until he is really relaxed and almost asleep then lay him down. That has worked really well. I think our DS was just not quite ready to soothe himself. We are going to try Ferber again around 6 months if he is having problems.
  • I would unswaddle for a couple nights first.  It took my LO a few nights to get used to being unswaddled.  After a couple nights unswaddled, I would take away the paci.  I do agree with you about her needing to have at least a hand free before taking away the paci.  She can't self soothe swaddled.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Another question: Those of you who Ferberized, did you do the same thing for night wakings that first night? Or did you just Ferberize when you put the baby to bed and deal with night wakings a few days or so later?

  • We did the same thing for night wakings as we did at bedtime and naps.

Same thing for night wakings.  The first night was tough but its gotten much much better!  Last night E slept soundly from 8-230 (I fed him) then he was right back asleep without any crying until 630.  If I ever met Dr. Ferber, I'd probably hump his leg!

Also, we dropped the paci and swaddle the same night (pre-ferber) and it only took one night for DS to get used to it.

    All the same day?
  • honestly? I would do one at a time. Try unswaddling first, then try the paci once your LO is adjusted to the no-swaddle.

LOL! Yes, I believe you might have to stand in line for that hump. :)

So, if you took the paci and swaddle away pre-Ferber, why did you end up needing Ferber?

  • I guess I would agree with other PP and de-swaddle first, then paci.  We just de-swaddled DS2, but I'm in no rush to take away his paci.  Halo sleepsacks really helped my LO transition from being swaddled, you could give that a try.
