Two Under 2

do you have help at home?

I work FT right now, but I am looking at cutting back my hours pretty drastically (from about 60 to about 12).

I was thinking I would still like to keep my cleaning service every other week, and maybe have someone come by and help with the boys a few hours a day two or three days a week.

Do you have help or do you do it all on your own?

Re: do you have help at home?

  • I don't have professional help like what you are talking about, but I have a strong support system between DH and my in-laws. Most of the time it's just me and the girls at home (I WAH), but if I need help in the evenings my MIL is more than happy to help with the girls and DH's schedule is flexible so if I need him he can be there.

  • I have a cleaning crew and just recently got a babysitter to come in every other Wed morning so I could run errands. Other than that, it's all me and DH.

  • My twins are due in 2 weeks but I'll have alot of help.  I have a weekly cleaning lady and I'll have a nanny help me full-time with all three kids.  it's mainly to enable me to take the kids out to the park, zoo, classes, etc. and so I can do things like bath all three more easily.

I'd probably have someone part-time if I just had 2 kids.

  • No help, here.  My mom occasionally will help with something around the house here or there but that's sort of rare.  Someday I definitely will have someone else to clean my house, but I have to fnish school first and then convince DH that it's worth it. I think when he sees what a difference it makes in free time during the week he will.  Right now it's a real struggle keeping up with the house and being on modified bedrest (can do a few things).  I still do the cooking and while I'm waiting for things on the stove I will scrub up a few dishes.  We dont have the luxury of paying someone to help when I am home.  We pay my aunt to watch the kids while I go to school but are trying to save a bit of money for the summer.  I can't really explain how in need of a mommy break I am right now!  Even for a few hours, or just to take a pee without someone trying to break down the door :)

  • The only "help" I have is my mom who lives locally and will watch the boys if I need to run errands or do a real good cleaning of the house or something.  I've been considering hiring a regular babysitter a morning or two a week but I'm not sure it's worth it on our budget.

If I could afford a cleaning service, I would do it in a heartbeat.

  • I have no help right now and cleaning gets done when I think about it/have time or if I hire a babysitter to watch the boys so I can clean.  DH is deployed.  If he was here, then he'd watch the boys.

  • Our second isn't here yet, but we have a bi-weekly cleaning lady, which has been a huge lifesaver.  I am currently interviewing babysitters/mother's helpers for after the baby gets here, to play with DD about 8 hours/week.  I'd prefer for her to go to a Mom's Day Out program, but she is currently wait-listed, so we'll see.

I know a lot of people do 2u2 with no help, and I'm sure I'd be just fine, but the house would be dirty, and I might go slightly insane.  Also, my mom and MIL are over about once/week to hang out with DD, which helps a lot.

  • Nope, we do it all on our own. We don't even have any family within 12 hours of us. This is quite possibly why we go crazy at times. :)

In fact, I'm quite surprised at all of the replies stating they have some sort of help. Perhaps this is why everyone on this board raves about 2u2 and the fact that they would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • lol--I don't have help either and no, I would not do this again in a heartbeat!!!!!  Kudos to those that did or would, but not me!!
  • This is the question I get asked most often. I don't have any help, but would love to have a housecleaner come once a month for the bigger jobs that are hard to get to with kids underfoot. I do all of the cleaning myself, mostly while the kids are asleep. I'm very lucky that my 4 year old still takes a three hour nap with the other kids. When that ends, it'll br harder to get things done!! If you don't have help, and you want your house to stay clean and run smoothly, you need to be organized and do a little every day.

  • I work FT.  We have a cleaning service come every other week and DD is in daycare full-time while I'm on maternity leave.  DH and family are very helpful as well.

  • I considered hiring a mother's helper type person for the summer, but honestly I haven't needed that much help yet. The baby sleeps a lot, so I can do stuff with DS then.

We do have a cleaning service though and I'm planning to send DS to preschool in the fall to have more one-on-one interaction with the baby (plus, it'll be good for him too).

We might hire a babysitter to come a few hours a week like you're suggesting when the LO is older and more alert.

  • I'm surprised at how many people have help.... like a couple other posters have mentioned, I'll keep this in mind next time I read a post about how easy 2u2 is. ;) I don't have any help, nor do I have any family nearby. My mom flew into town for 2 weeks when DS #2 was first born, but other than that it's been me and DH. The house isn't spotless, but we're all fed and clean and mostly happy, so most days I feel like I'm managing pretty well. And I get out of the house to do fun things with the boys a lot more than I expected I'd be able to. It would be nice to have someone else clean the house though!

  • All on my own.  My parents live nearby but both work fulltime.

No, I have no help at home besides DH and he has a very demanding work schedule. I am often alone with the two kids until they're in bed. My ILs live an hour away and my parents are 4 hours away.
