Working Moms

working moms that travel...

Any suggestions? My job requires that I travel a fair amount, luckily not by plane (usually 2-4 hours from home). I go back next Monday and I am trying to be as prepared as possible. I am BF so I am trying to get organized with pumping, etc.

Any advice would be wonderful. TIA.

Re: working moms that travel...

  • It's tough for moms returning to work. For working moms that pump it's just worse, sorry!

But it gets a lot easier, no worries.

When you travel be sure to know when and where you will be able to pump and stick to it -- don't be shy and if need be just interrupt with a little heads up "I will need to excuse myself for about 20 minutes at 11:30am, hope that's ok".

The other logistic to worry about, is where to clean your parts. Bring some soap if you can, at least some thick paper towel so you can dry off very well the parts you will wash with hot water (if dish soap is not an option). Always pack the charger for the pump, you never know. And double check you always have your bag ready with bottle and CAPS! or milk bags.

I used ice packs in a zipped cooler-style pocket, and that worked for me for the day.

If you have to pump in your car, bring a towel, oversized shirt or nursing cover for added privacy and bring some magazines :)

  • I travel for work via planes, so by car should be a little easier.  Just make sure you have a place to store the milk, wash parts (you can use the medela wipes if necessary), and make sure to pump on schedule.

I'm sure you'll run into more questions as you go, but good luck!

  • Will you be gone overnight?

Just plan ahead as much as possible.  I find it helpful to keep a master pack list so I don't forget anything.  Take lots of ziploc bags.  I also thought those cleaning wipes (medela or other brands) were really helpful while traveling.  If you stay in a hotel, I'd call the hotel to see if you can arrange for a fridge in your room.

I thought the hardest part about traveling was making time to pump.  I was so uncomfortable sometimes because I didn't have time to pump.  It helped me to get all the pump parts ready beforehand, so if I only had 15 minutes, I could get the most out of it.  Make sure to take extra batteries for the pump.

Other than that, I try to help DH out by making him dinner that he can just reheat (nothing fancy--just a casserole or even pasta with sauce) because it's hard for him to make anything when he's watching DS.  I kind of enjoy having a night away now and again.  I get to read, workout, eat what I want for dinner, and just lay around and watch movies/bad tv in peace.  Try to enjoy it.
