Babies: 3 - 6 Months

General question about sleep training

So lately DD has been putting up a fight (at naptime and bedtime).  Usually if she does fuss/cry, it is no more than 1-2 minutes, but last night she was all out crying and we had to rock her to sleep and then she woke up an hour later, and then 2 hours after that as well.

I am going to get some books before I would start any sleep training (and waiting til DD is older) but am wondering, how do you know that there isn't something "wrong" with LO, i.e. tummy ache, gas, etc?  Obviously you know if they've been fed, diaper changed, tired....but how do you assess for anything else....so that you know its OK to start sleep training?

Re: General question about sleep training

  • Babies sleep cycles are about 90 minutes.  That why she woke up when she did.  Ideally, when she wakes up or is in light sleep at the end of each sleep cycle, she should be able to check to make sure nothing is wrong or change positions or self soothe and go back to sleep.  Which she must do most of the night, since she isn't up every 1.5 - 2 hours all night.  :)

Most books say to start sleep training between 4-6 months.  I think you kind of just have to go with your gut about your own LO to figure out if they are ready.  I think that if there is nothing "wrong" until you put LO in her crib, then there is probably not something wrong and LO is ok.

  • We read Dr. Ferber's book and implemented it about a week and a half ago and have seen great improvement.  I totally agree with PP that said go with your gut.  I thought Evan was ready for sleep training before we did it and waited b/c lots of people (mostly on here!) were appauled at the idea of sleep training at his age.  He did so well so quickly that I think I was right and could have started sooner.

I also worry when he cries that maybe something is wrong but his "I'm annoyed you're not coming to rock me" cry is way different from his "my teeth/belly/whatever hurt" cry.  So it's a judgement call but I am generally talked down from going in and checking on him by DH and DS is asleep in under 5 minutes every time now.  GL
