Babies: 3 - 6 Months

For those that are PLANNING on 2u2, and BF

We're thinking we'd like to start trying again sometime in February 2011.  Right now I EBF, and don't have my period.  I'm not using any BC other than having DH use a condom for now, but I'm curious if continuing to BF will have a significant impact on my fertility at that point (Liam will be 11-ish months old).  Is anyone else facing this?

  • I would like to start "trying" right after Tristan's first birthday in February also.  I'm not using any form of BC and we don't use condoms.  BF has kept my period away so far but by the time DS approaches 1 year old I don't think I will be nursing enough times a day to keep me from ovulating.

  • you can still get pregnant while BFing. Just because you don't have a period doesn't mean you aren't fertile.
  • I would ask this on the breastfeeding board or 2u2, because they probably have more info.  It should not be a problem.  Most EBFing moms get their period before 11 months.  Lots of women conceive while breastfeeding and you can continue breastfeeding LO while pregnant (and even after LO is born depending on how long you want to BF the oldest).

We are going to start trying in May of 2011 Keira will be over a year at that point.  My OB said your period generally returns on average within 4 months even with bfing (once the baby stops nursing around the clock) and that is what happened with me. She also said if you want to increase your chances of it returning pumping to replace feedings can help since it is the baby nursing all that time that often trigers it not to come back.  My friend said hers returned around 9 months when her LO increased solids.  I think you should be okay.  Here is some info from Kellymom https://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertility.html

I have 2u2 and got pregnant when DS was 8 months old.  I BF DS and my period didn't return until 7 months.  I charted prior to DS and start charting again as soon as my period returned.  I was able to get pregnant after 2 months of charting but it was a bit "harder" because my cycle was out of wack from what I was use to but clearer not much harder since it only took 2 months.  Now that being said, as soon as I got pregant DS immediately started to wean.  My midwife says that happens a lot because the milk changes right away and although I could BF during my entire pregnancy, most kids wean by the time your 20 weeks because the milk is more like colstrium at that point.  DS was fully weaned (he did it all himself) by 10 months.
  • I'm on trying again when LO turns a year. From what I've read a lot of women's periods return with the introduction of solids.

    this.

I EBF and am on the pill and am now pregnant.

  • Thanks for the info all!  I did read about it a bit, and one thing that was specifically mentioned was your period returning when you drop the middle of the night feeding.  Liam only really used to wake up once a night even when he was under a month old, and he STTN now, but no sign of my period yet - not that I want it now, anyway!

I didn't chart with Liam - we literally decided to have a baby, and bam, we're pregnant - but I am wondering if I should consider trying it when we get closer to that time frame, assuming that I have my period once we start solids at 6 months.

Both my babies were sleeping 12 hours at night by 8 weeks old.  With #1, my period returned at month 7.  #2 is now 5 months old and still no period.
