Benihana-type restaurant with toddler?

Have any of you taken your LOs to a Benihana-type restaurant to eat? The kind where you sit at the grill and the chef makes a little show out of cooking the food. I can't tell if this is a brilliant idea or recipe for disaster. I think DS would love to watch the show (and he is used to going out to eat at restaurants and is pretty well behaved). Or, I can see him trying to reach over and touch the grill and getting mad that he can't. Anyone have experiences to share?

  • I took my DS to one and he did awesome.  He loved watching the show! I didn't have any problem with him trying to reach for the grill. He was in a high chair, and the table part was wide enough so he couldn't have reached it if he tried.

  • I took my daughter last weekend to a place like this and when the chef made the flame spout out she freaked out. She was fine after that.

  • We did this with DD.  She did great.  And the tables are really wide, and she was in a high chair, so there was no way she could have touched the grill.  The flames kinda scared her, but it was more just a scared look on her face.  She didn't break down or anything.  Have fun!

  • We go once a month to Kobe's which is like benihana. DD does really well there. I keep the high chair away from the table until it's time to eat. Even if she were closer, she can't reach the grill.
  • We took Owen when he was less than a year old and then a time or two since then. He loves hibachi and did really well at it!

  • I'd definitely give it a try.  Sounds fun!  We take LO everywhere except one restaurant in town that we know the owners don't "appreciate" children at (fine dining).  If he cries or acts up we manage it as best we can and/or make an early and graceful as possible exit.
  • Thanks everyone! We went today with another family with a toddler and they were great! It was funny b/c at the big flare up in the beginning, the other kid screamed out with fright, which startled DS. The rest of the time, he was entranced by the show but had to hold my hand for assurance. So cute! It was great food, too. We will definitely do it again!
