My 10.5 months LO is refusing to eat all mashed up food (tried every single Gerber Stage 2) and only wants to eat finger foods. The problem is that he gags/throws up unless the pieces are very small and very easily masheable by his gums. He does ok with cheese, banana, puffs, steamed carrots, egg yolk, pancakes.
Questions:
1. What are other soft/easily masheable finger foods that you know of (besides the ones I mentioned above)? (looking for ideas of stuff he can eat)
2.Since the pieces he eats are very small, it takes a long time to eat very little food and so he barely eats anything. How can I make sure that he is getting enough to eat? How much finger foods is your LO eating at one sitting?
Re: Finger foods questions! Help!
have you tried yogurt? DS loves yogurt, and is a picky puree eater.
We found lots of ideas on wholesomebabyfood.com for other finger food ideas, like meatballs, broccoli bites, toast ideas, etc
Honestly, it sounds like your LO is ready for stage 3. Oddly enough, with DS I had a heck of a time doing stage 3 until he finally got the hang of finger foods!!
I'll let DS pick at finger foods, but I also still give him stage 3 stuff.
Oh, and he loooooves grilled cheese. I cut the crust off and put two slices of american cheese in it (so its good and chewy/gooey) and he can't get enough.
You can try graham crackers and animal crackers, too. I know they're a little more on the crunchy side but your LO might surprise you and like it.
You can also try mashing up whatever you're having for dinner. DS really surprised DH and I the one night. I brought home one of those rotisserie chickens from the store and figured I'd give DS a couple of bites but that he probably wouldn't eat it. Um, yeah, DEAD wrong - our little oinker ate a LOT more than we were expecting.
Let's... we've also done scrambled eggs, toast, hot dogs (not all together, obviously), chicken noodle casserole with veggies... Pretty much, if we're eating it, he wants to try it (he even tried chinese with us tonight, though he didn't seem to care for it).
Have you tried giving him tylenol or ibuprofen? Ibuprofen has been the only thing that gets the swelling down enough that he can tolerate having a spoon or bottle in his mouth.
I'd pretty much guarantee its the teething that is making him act this way. Its funny, they get cranky because they're hungry but they can't/won't eat then they get crankier because they're still hungry... Its never ending!
I don't give him pieces any bigger than my thumbnail. Any time I try giving him something bigger (tried a quarter of a pancake (oh, yeah, pancakes, too!) and he tried shoveling all of it into his mouth at once!
I did give him Motrin a few times when he was really miserable but I usually try to feed him before I give Motrin (cause I heard that it is better on their tummy that way). That is a great idea to try to feed him after I give Motrin! I will try that!
I usually give pieces as small as his thumb nail because I heard that this way if they swallow it whole they wont choke, but it takes him forever to eat anything that way. I will try to give bigger pieces. Cross your fingers for me! Thank you so much for all of your advice! Your LO is adorable!
No advice from me - just commenting that my little guy is going through the same thing right now. He only barely tolerated the spoon before, but the past few days he has been hating it. He's only getting a few bites of finger foods before he gets bored and throws the food to the dogs. He did really like mac and cheese and cheese cubes the other day, but when I tried it again, he had no interest. It's worrisome, but I'm just trusting it will pass.
Yeah, I was holding off on that, too, but I finally broke down and gave it to him before eating. The reality was (for us anyway) that he wasn't going to eat, period, because he was in pain. I gave it to him just before putting him down for a nap and when he woke up he ate like a HORSE!!!
Like my DH said, we had to break the cycle before doing anything else. Now we're at a point that it lasts long enough that we can feed him before giving it to him and all is well. Unfortunately, he's been on it pretty much non-stop for the last couple of days. His one top tooth looks like it could break through and second and if they're like his bottom ones, the other will only be a couple of days behind. I also noticed yesterday a little white bump on either side of his bottom teeth, so it looks like those are trying to come through now, too. Poor little guy has been in so much pain and miserable lately. I don't like having him on the meds, but I'd rather have him happy and pain free and able to play and all that than just having him cry all day, not be able to eat or sleep, etc.
No problem on the advice. Looks like our LO's are about the exact same age and we're both going through the same thing! LOL!
Yes, I think our LO's are going through the same thing at the same time! Poor babies! I heard that 1 year molars are even worse - something to look forward to.
Its just so tough because they can't yet tell us why they are not eating and whether their teeth are really hurting or if they are just fussy or if they would like to eat something else or what is going on. I cant wait til they can talk!
Hang in there!
