Sleeping on your back

Anyone ever find themself sleeping on their side and wake up to find out your flat on your back?? I know you're not supposed to sleep on your back because blood flow going to the baby is decreased, but I find myself this way sometimes when I wake up. I have an appointment tomorrow and will bring this up but until then, I just want to know who else finds themself like this? Anyone ever done this during pregnancy and baby came out healthy?? Would like to know your input!

  • I do this pretty much every night. I start on my sides, always wake up on my back. It's probably WHY i wake up!! Your body will alert you if its causing trouble, and you'll either wake up or roll over in your sleep.

I am still on my back sometimes. Up until just a few weeks ago it was really comfortable, but now my belly is just too heavy and it really bothers me to lay that way. but during the night it happens.

  • I wake up on my back quite a bit. Your body will tell you when it isn't safe - it's probably the reason you are waking up. Just adjust when you do wake up and everything will be fine.

  • I wake up on my back all the time, but now that the baby is so heavy it can really make my back, hips, and whole pelvis hurt like none other! i told me doctor about it and she said just try to sleep on your side and your body will roll over or wake you up if you roll on your back.

  • I always wake up on my back and I'm always very sore from it. Like pp said, I think I wake up because of how uncomfortable it is and then I just adjust.

  • I did this all the time with DD, and she's perfectly healthy.  I've been doing the same with this pregnancy.  I just move to my side if I wake up on my back.

  • FWIW, when I mentioned this to my doc, she looked at me like I was crazy and was like, "so what? You want to tie yourself down to keep from rolling over?" If you wake up, roll back on your side. No biggie.

I can't breathe when I am on my back, so I stay on my side. Gets annoying at this point because I just want to lay on my belly or back!

  • My OB says it's fine to sleep on my back but to put a pillow under my right side and have it slightly elevated.  Works like a charm!

Also, when I was pregnant with DS, I slept on my back a lot but didn't tell me OB that I did.  I would wake up with two numb hands.  It was scary so I mentioned it this pregnancy :)

  • Sleeping on your back does NOT cut off circulation to the baby!  I cannot say this enough, because everyone seems to think that it does and gets so darn freaked out about things like waking up on your back. The weight of the uterus puts pressure on the IVC, which is venous and is returning blood to the heart. Therefore, back sleeping can be uncomfortable to mamas because you may start to feel pressure and pain in the legs, tingling, etc. from the back-up of blood coming from the lower extremities. But baby is getting blood just fine, I promise!

  • ive always been most comfortable on my back so I do it often... sometimes when im having a hard time sleeping i will lay on my back for just a few minutes to help me relax and fall asleep. I talked to my dr about it and she told me that the baby is getting everything it needs it just may cause more swelling for me because the blood isnt getting back to your heart as quickly. but like PP said, your body usually alerts you when somethings up... I typically wake up and roll to my side after 20min or so.  Sometimes i will put a pillow behind me when sleep in my side so when i do roll on my back im not flat on my back, im still "slanted" LOL alittle to the left.
  • I pretty much always sleep on my back... just super propped up.

I tried my side, but it is SO uncomfortable for me!! It really hurts my shoulder, and I would always wake up on my back anyways.

There has been one time I did wake up and it was because I had kind of rolled onto my belly (earlier in the pregnancy)... I have never felt my heart pounding so hard, and I was totally asleep and not having a nightmare... that had to have been what caused it. It was such a strong feeling.... but after that, I knew that my body would guide me through the pregnancy, so I just listen to my body now. You know what feels right.... don't stress!!
