Another crib? Double stroller?

Our children will be 23 months apart and I'm having a tough time deciding on what to buy. I'd love to hear what you did/your thoughts.

We were considering keeping Ethan in his crib pretty much until he attempted climbing out.  First, I feel that he is already going to have so many transitions coming up... if all goes well we'll be moving this fall, then the new baby, and we haven't decided yet but I may stay at home so he would leave his daycare, which he enjoys.  He loves his bed and I worry about adding the transition to a toddler or twin bed in there.  It's hard to decide b/c at 23 months, he might be ready for a toddler/twin bed.  How long was your LO in a crib?

I've started looking at double strollers and have no idea what to do.  We LOVE our Mountain Buggy jogging stroller and use it everywhere.  We returned our little Maclaren umbrella stroller and plan to sell our Bumbleride stroller b/c we NEVER use it (it's a great stroller but we've used it less than a dozen times).  I've looked at double Mountain Buggy's and it says they fit through standard sized doors, which is great, but I wonder if it will fit through aisles in a store in the mall.  I'd hate to spend over $400 and not be able to use it at the mall or outlets.  I've looked at double strollers that have two seats in a line and wonder if I should be looking into those more.

If you have a double stroller, is it a side by side or front and back?  Do you use it at the mall or stores?

Re: Another crib? Double stroller?

  • Christina, I went through the same thing! Here's what I can tell you...

We moved Claire from the crib to a toddler bed right around 18 months. She did GREAT!!! I put the bed in the same spot her crib was in. The crib stayed in the room and she never really asked to be in it. We made sure to praise her for being a big girl and sleeping in her new bed and told her that the crib was now for her baby sister Anna. They are 20 months apart. I wanted Claire to be well adjusted to her new bed before Anna was born and it worked out just fine.

We have a BOB duallie (side-by-side). I honestly don't know what I would do without it!!! There are some times that Claire wants to walk, but most of the time she is happy to ride with her sissy :-) We take it everywhere!! There are some stores that are hard to get around, but over all it works well. I'd rather try to maneuver the double stroller than figure out another way to deal with 2 kids - especially when I'm alone with them.

I hope that helps a little bit! Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you :-)

  • I am going through the same thing.  DC#2 is due in September, at the same time DD will turn 2.  We just started the transition out of the crib. We are actually moving her out of her room and into a full-size bed.  However, we started small.  We converted the crib to a toddler bed about two weeks ago and kept her in the same room, following the same nightly routine.  I was so nervous about it, but she did great!  I think it is helpful that she doesn't nap in a crib at daycare, just a napmat (since about 15 months).  Perhaps your son does the same thing?  She did get out of bed and play a bit before returning to the bed to go to sleep, but I haven't had any problems and haven't had to go in.  I think it helps to keep the entire routine the same except for that.  Kids know their routine and when it is time for bedtime/naptime.   Good luck with the transition!

I'm very interested to hear everyone else's thoughts on the stroller issue.  DD is currently fighting the stroller, so I haven't thought much about it. Hopefully, that will end soon!

  • How long was your LO in a crib? Until right around when she was two, but we had the toddler railing on from about when she was 20ish months. They're 22 mos. apart, so she was in it until after he was born, but he was in the PNP in our room for about 5 mos.

If you have a double stroller, is it a side by side or front and back?  Do you use it at the mall or stores? Front and back. We have a graco dupglider and a sit n stand and when I was deciding on doubles, the duoglider is the one I said I'd never get. We got an insane deal on it and have used the heck out of it. Mia just turned 3 and we use the sit n stand now a lot, but it's still nice to have th duoglider. We're at the beach right now and it has better shade and lets them both sit back and relax. It's not small, but there's not really such a thing as a small double stroller and the side by sides would drive me bananas. We also keep a small umbrella stroller in the car now for when I run out with both kids for errands, etc. Then Mia doesn't sit in one. I'd definitely suggest looking on craigslist for nice doubles - that way if you don't use them a ton you don't feel as badly about the money spent.

  • Oh, and I've heard a lot of people say that the stroller thing depends a LOT on the kids. Another reason not to spend a ton:) If you have one who's not interested in the stroller anymore, you'll get even less use out of a double. Mia still likes to sit a lot, so it's been good for us, but I know there are people who say that their older ones never even sit in a stroller anymore and they hardly use a double.
  • I've been thinking about these things, too, Christina, and I'm glad you asked!  I have no idea what we're going to do about a 2nd crib/big girl bed, yet, but I have a feeling my little monkey may be climbing her way out of the crib and into a big girl bed very soon.

As for the double stroller, since I have a winter due date, I'm thinking about waiting on purchasing a double stroller until the spring and seeing if I can get away with having DD in the stroller and wearing LO#2 for most of the winter.  It's not like we'll be doing that much walking outside, so it'd bascially be in the mall, etc.  Just thought I'd throw that out there as an idea to you, as you have a winter due date as well.  This way the baby will be older, and it'll make it easier to pick a stroller. But if we do decide to get a double stroller, I plan on spending a good amount of money on it.  Watching my friend struggle with her duoglide does not look fun at all.

  • Kids adjust better then you would think. In the last 6 months Colby went threw two moves, started a new sitter, got a new bed, and now has a baby sister and he has done great.  I didnt get a double stroller because Colby hates it and is a good walker but I would think an inlines stroller would be easier.
