New Orleans Babies

Just moved into town ...

Hi ladies ... I'm Paula and my lo is Zaila (Zay-la) ... we just moved here from Chicago 2 1/2 weeks ago ... I'm a regular on the eco-friendly board and 3 - 6 months (now that Zaila is almost 4 months old). I'm a SAHM (typically a university psychology professor but all of that changed once our lo got here).

My husband is an epidemiologist, which is why we relocated and we absolutely love New Orleans ... owe were married in the Quarter May 23, 2009) .... our families no longer live in New Orleans (Katrina), most live in various cities around the state.

My first question ... anyone have any recommendations for part-time childcare? A few hours here and there type of thing ... we REALLY need the help. We live a couple blocks from Tulane and Loyola.

Thanks and again, nice to meet everyone.

  • I just wanted to welcome you to the board.  I do not live in that area.  I am sorry I can't recommend a place to you.

  • Hi! We recently moved back ourselves and I've been looking for part-time/Mother's Day Out for Presley but have had no luck, so far. Everyone is on a pretty lengthy wait list or only offers Full-Time care. It's been the most frustrating thing for me to deal with. Like you, I'm only looking for someone to watch her a couple of days a week for a few hours. The places I've looked at or talked to so far are:

Rayne UMC: Full-time only. 6-12 month wait list

CDP on Claiborne: Wait-listed, but do offer part-time. However, I'm not certain that we'd send her there.

Uptown Learning Center: Full-time only. Wait list.

Abeona House: Wait list. Wasn't thrilled w their administrator so I didn't even follow-up here.

Munholland KDO: Waiting to hear back from them. They offer part-time but I'm certain they're on a wait-list, too.

I think that's most of who I've talked to. We live not far from you. Welcome!!

Ditto on KDO. They are great, I really like it there. My neighbor was on a wait list for quite some time (like a year) but I was only on for about 3 weeks. Maybe I just got lucky, I don't know. Can't hurt trying!

  • Wow! Thanks for the info! I'm gonna definitely try KDO ... and thanks for the welcome Wink
  • Hi!  I just wanted to say hello and welcome!  I don't live in NOLA I live on the Northshore so I can't help you much with your request - welcome!
  • Little Learners on Canal and Jeff. Davis offers part time Daycare.

PS.  I am a transplant too... WELCOME TO THE AREA!

  • Hi. I live in your area Uptown near Tulane. :)

DD just started daycare at St. Louis King of France School in Metairie. They have part time and the price is really reasonable. Their baby program just opened up this week so everything in the place is brand new, which is nice. So far I have been satisfied with the care my baby gets.

I also live Uptown near Tulane and SLKF was the only place I found that didn't have a wait list for 6 wk old. How do you find the drive out to Lakeview everyday?

  • My husband takes her. He said the drive to lakeview isn't bad but getting back downtown is annoying because of the traffic. I pick her up around 4ish and at that time, its easy to zip over to lakeview and back.

So far I've been really happy with the care dd is getting there. Has your baby started there yet?

  • No. He's not due for another 6 days (ugh). We're planning on him starting mid-October,
