3rd Trimester

My vaginal delivery recovery recommendation

Hello all!  I'm slightly jealous of you because I miss being pregnant.  I love my baby girl to no end but if I could, I'd get pregnant again yesterday!!  Don't worry - I plan on waiting at least 9 months to start trying again; my vag needs it's personal space right now.  ;)

I have a recommendation for recovering after a vaginal delivery.  The hospital will provide you with all that you need to heal (tucks pads, numbing spray, huge pads, mesh panties, meds, and squirt bottle).   But there are 2 things that were not provided to me that really helped.

1.  hemorrhoid donut for sitting on hard surfaces (at home of course).  You can also use your boppy pillow if you're embarrassed about the donut.

2. baby wipes for cleaning yourself after using the bathroom.  They are much softer and nicer on your traumatized bum.  Some people use tucks pad to wipe but I preferred baby wipes because they are larger than the tucks pads.

Okay... those are my two recommendations!  Good luck to you all and enjoy the last few months, weeks, days, and hours of being pregnant!  I sure miss it.  :)

by the way... meeting your baby for the first time is truly indescribable.  Have fun!

  • Thank you for the tip and congrats on a beautiful baby girl!!

  • I second the recommendation on the doughnut or boppy to sit on!  Especially in the car, those bumps can REALLY hurt!  Also for later on make sure you invest in a boat load of lube, sex won't be any fun without it, especially if you BF!

  • Excellent suggestions... I would also say drink metamucil, it will really help with bowel movements in the end, trust me.  Oh yeah and a water/spray bottle to wash yourself after going to the toilet is probably the best for the first 36 hours, a lot of hospital give them to you....

YES!  I used the Boppy to sit on for a while, it was the best.

  • My hospital gave me a donut.  That + Dermoplast= tolerable!  I didn't wipe with anything for at least a week- I used the squirt bottle, but yeah, don't use TP.

This!!!   If you use TP, gently pat - but do NOT wipe!!!    (as instructed to me by Dr. and nurses....)

Also, blow drying your perineum area makes it feel better for a while (be careful not to use a hot setting!!!)

I even sat on the boppy at home haha... I'm pretty sure that's the only thing the boppy has been used for.

Oh and second that I miss being pregnant! It has flown by and seems like just yesterday that DS was born...I'm already wanting another haha... but I'll wait a year or two.

  • Great suggestions - with one side note.  Be careful with the baby wipes.  I did the same thing with my first and ended up with a wee infection down there.  My midwife thought it was because of the wipes.  Maybe it was the brand I used?

can i add my 2 cents? i used TP - gently pat. if you want to use TP, BRING YOUR OWN. i can't stress that enough. i was in the hospital for almost a week since my baby was in the NICU. i needed stitches and having my own toilet paper was awesome, the hospital stuff hurts even to gently pat.
