Sitting up

What can I do to help her sit up on her own?  I try sitting her up and she still tips over pretty quick.  I'm hoping she'll be able to sit up on her own by 6 months (she's not quite 5 months).  Is it one of those things that they can just suddenly do?  Because that's how it was with rolling from back to tummy.  One day she just started doing it all on her own.

Can I ask when she started doing this? From what I've read, it's supposed to be one of the things my dudes "should" be showing interest in doing at this point, but neither of them are interested in the slightest. They're like, "Roll over? Why would we want to do that, crazy lady? We're totally comfy on our backs!" (I'm not worried, just curious about when it happened for others.)

  • Keep on doing what you're doing...that's what we did with Libby.  I'd use the Boppy behind her (sit her in the middle) and she learned to do baby crunches when she "fell back" (not that far since she had the Boppy there) and pull herself back up to a sit position.

I'd also sit on the floor with her between my legs (my legs open) and play with her toys that way.  One day shy of her 5 month bday I sat her on our bed expecting her to topple over and she didn't!  Then I snapped a zillion pics! LOL!

We have this cool seat/toy that she's used since she was about 8 weeks old and I think it helped her learn how to sit too (sort of in the way a Bumbo does)...she usually sits in it when we eat.

She only started doing it a couple weeks ago. She had been rolling from tummy to back for a long time though. I think most babies roll both ways by 5-6 months. So you may have a way to go with the boys.

Thanks, Lori. I just want her to be sitting unassisted when we start solids. Isn't it funny how they can just suddenly do things one day that they couldn't the day before?

  • I practiced with her a lot.  i couldn't remember when she was sitting and i just checked back to my youtube videos (that we send to the grandparents) and it looks like i was working with her on it as early as 2.5 months!! i have a video of her sitting up for 10 seconds before toppling at 2 months 3 weeks LOL.  it wasn't until she was about 4.5 months old, though, that she was really sitting unassisted.  i would sit her up every day and have my hands on either side of her to catch her, or like Lori, i would put her in the boppy and it would catch her if she fell backward and i'd just keep my hands in front of her to prevent her from face planting.  it became our daily routine instead of tummy time (she still got tummy time, but it wasn't my focus like it was when she was younger). it's all about strengthening those trunk muscles.

and, fwiw, i don't think you should start solids with her until she can sit unassisted, even if that is after she turns 6 months old. i think if you start too early before she is ready, it's just going to be more of a struggle. just my 2 cents :)

  • I always just had jack sitting in my lap (I sit butterfly style on the floor) and he would balance himself with his arms on my knees while I read books or DH played in front of him.  I think that helped.  I read they really need to reflex to put their arm down when they start to topple so I figured that would help.  Otherwise the only other thing I did is we are always holding him - when we eat he is on our lap and we have him in a seated position which I guess probably helped strengthen his back and core - we try to let him balance himself.

Re: rolling over - all babies are different but I still think 2.5 mo. is a little early.  Jack did it backwards and rolled from back to tummy before consistently figuring out how to roll from tummy to back - he could do both by the time I went back to work, so 12 weeks and everyone with babies seemed surprised so I think that was probably on the early side.  My friend has a baby that is 1 week older than Jack and she was surprised that Jack is so mobile b/c her baby isn't.  She said their ped didn't seem overly concerned that she hasn't rolled yet at the 4mo appt.

with us, she would be doing tummy time and she'd kind of lean to the side w/her head a bit like she wanted to roll over but she'd never do it. then one day she just put enough weight to one side and rolled over. to me, rolling from belly to back isn't as much of an active process (since gravity and the weight of their heads does most of the work) as rolling from back to tummy so it may be one of those things where one day the boys just do it all of a sudden.  you're much more likely to see them making an effort to roll from back to belly, though.  i think they're a bit young to be showing interest in rolling back to belly... miss A didn't start showing interest in doing that until she was 4 months old (and then it took about 2 weeks for her to do it)

hehehe, wish I could share some videos of Jack - not sure why but he has the most complicated set of movements to get from tummy to back.  He pulls his knees up under him, kicks up on to his legs (so he is no resting on his shoulders/head (eek!) and his feet and then swings his butt over and completes the roll by shifting his shoulders.  I don't know if he just can't figure out how to move his shoulder and let gravity do it's thing, or if the roll is an accidental bi-product of him trying to move forward or what.

now back to tumm is easy peasy.  He just brings his legs up straight in the air and then drops them to one side and then easily just gets the shoulder under him.

He was always like this.  The day we brought him home from the hospital I put him in his crib (on his back) to change his diaper and turned around to grab the supplies and when I turned back he was on his side.  I straightened him out and he immediately did it again  I thought it was an odd post-birth reflex that he would loose, but he never did. Now he can do that AND arch his back and twist which is already making diaper changes (especially with prefolds) a trying task.

  • I think seeing Jack sitting gives me a complex because he's younger than Kaya. I know that's dumb because all babies are different. And really I guess I shouldn't be in a rush for her to grow up! But anyways, I think she might crawl before she sits because she's already pulling her body forward. Not sure if it's considered commando crawling or what but she definitely scoots. She would also rather stand than anything. Pretty much since she was born she has lived when we hold her standing up.

This is Adrian's new thing. He never really showed interest per se -- he's just always been pretty squirmy when you laid him down.

He was 10-11 weeks when it happens, but I've also read that they don't often do it till later. I think getting rid of the swaddle really sped things up for him since all the activity mainly happened in the process of sleep. It started with him turning onto his side and sleeping like that. Then one night I woke up to feed him and he was on his tummy! Since then, he does it all the time.

you totally shouldn't worry about it! it does sound like she is starting to commando crawl (crawling w/her belly on the ground) so that is cool :) you're right - every baby is different. and once she becomes mobile everything changes (diaper changes get harder, you can't just leave her to go put a load in the washer etc) so enjoy it while it lasts!

  • Elyse just started sitting one day.  I saw my friends daughter sitting in the boppy like Lori suggested, so I tried E in it and she just sat there.  I felt bad for not giving her the opportunity to do it earlier.  She loves sitting all the time now.

Our little guy was like this too - he still loves to stand!  But he is now sitting by himself (and getting himself to that position alone).  Like pp said, just sitting him in between your legs or in the  boppy is good - once he had head control, he really liked being in the bumbo too.  not sure how good that is at helping with the sitting muscles, but it definitely showed him what that perspective is like and he wanted to be that way rather than on the floor.
