Baths & daycare

So, right now I don't bathe Finn everyday, but I was thinking once he starts going to daycare at 8 weeks, I might start.  What do you guys do if you have a LO in daycare? I don't want to dry his skin out, but it just seems like he'll need it.

TIA

Re: Baths & daycare

  • can I ask why daycare would mean he would need more baths? I'm lost.

  • we arent at daycare or anything but we bathe Samantha everynight, she likes it and i make sure i put baby lotion her her after her bath. i just dont wash her hair everynight unless it needs it (if she gets sick and some how gets in it)

Bath just about every day now.  Every other day with soap only.  Probably will do less frequently as it gets colder and drier here.

If LO starts to get dry skin, you can just do a quick hand and fold wash.

  • Well at daycare he'll be around a lot more people and things that are touched by other kids. I was just thinking there would be a need for daily baths more than just being at home with me all day....

Eh, if hes going to get germs, he's going to get germs. Washing them off several hours after being exposed won't do much :D

  • My baby has very sensitive skin and would get rashes, my doctor had me start bathing him every night at about 8 weeks.  He loves bath time anyway and we do it as part of a bedtime routine.  I give him a massage with lotion (California Baby is awesome!) afterward!  He is 4 months old now and his skin is still as soft as ever.  He does go to day care as well but that did not have anything to do with when we bathed him.  Also, the more germs your baby is exposed to early on the healthier their immune systems will be. My son has only had 2 vaccines and is in full-time childcare.
  • I don't have DS2 in daycare or school yet but when DS1 was/is in school or any other childcare he gets a bath and I would do the same if it was DS1.   Contrary to IrishBrideND, I think washing helps prevent germs from infecting DC (sure there is still initial exposure, but recurrent exposure increases the risk of infection/illness), prevents from spreading to the his bed and reinfecting later, as well as prevents spreading to other family members and friends.

If something was going around your daycare, wouldn't you hope other parents are washing their kids so they aren't bringing it back day after day (in addition to the daycare disinfecting every night)?

I normally bathe both DSs each night as part as the wind-down for bed routine anyway so maybe that influences me pro-bath.
