Hi Ladies!
I've been mostly pumping for the past 10 weeks due to multiple nipple/boob issues from day 1. I do nurse DS 1-4 times a day... usually one of his night feedings, then 1 or 2 if I'm out and about, or if I'm home w/out help and can't get around to pumping.
My problem is that I still have major pain, especially on my left side, when I nurse more than twice a day. It subsides a bit after the 1st minute, but still, I dread that latch! And it's often uncomfortable the entire time. I'm frustrated b/c it's been 10 weeks already! Do you think it's because I only nurse him a few times a day? Do I have to go through more excruciating trials/day to build up a tolerance?
I've been to an LC about 4 times (2 different ones) who've both approved his latch. They recommended increasing my BF sessions as tolerated, but I don't seem to tolerate it. He gets a good bit of areola, that's for sure. Also, my right boob always feels so much better than the left... like it's "supposed" to, I guess.... although it does get painful at times, too. I'd love to switch to exclusive BF... that's been my goal this whole time... but maybe it's not in the cards.
Has anyone else had pain this far into LO's life?
Thanks for your input!
Re: still have nipple pain at 10 weeks! help!
I have the same issue until DD was almost 5 months old. Until finally someone figured out my issue. Have you been checked for thrush/yeast on your nipples? It's probably not that, but it's worth checking.
I had more pain when pumping because of the way it sat on my nipple. Once I stopped pumping my pain went away completely.
But, my pain was diagnosed as Reynaud's disease. It was only one of my nipples and it was horrible pain each time she nursed and it would even hurt sometimes when my shirt rubbed it the wrong way. I found breast shells to be helpful (https://www.amazon.com/Medela-Shell-Inverted-Nipple-Shields/dp/B003C7VA52) and the doctor gave me an Rx (procardia) for the reynauds. After starting the meds, the problem was resolved!
I understand how frustrated you are! I just happened to talk to the right lactation consultant, who called a doctor for me and talked to her, and they figured it all out!
I just found relief yesterday for sore nipples. though it is a bit late for me already since both my nips are now wounded (it bled a lot in the first 6 days) i am now happy to have discovered the perfect latch for us. and the pain now just last for the first 30 secs (which the LC says is normal)
the advice i got was whenever BFing, make sure that LOs whole body faces you, and that there is an imaginary straight line from his ears, shoulder, and then hips while nursing. use a stoll to put your feet on, and a pillow underneath LO to make you comfortable. it helps to sit on an upright chair with pillow on the back too, because it is the baby that has to come to you and not you towards the baby. anyway, Before giving him your breast, wait for him to open up as big as how he opens up for a yawn. it may take some time to wait for him to open up that big, but it is worth it. also, make sure that his lower lip and upper lip are flanged out like a goldfish whenever he is nursing. that way he is able to take in as much areola as possible. if he is not latching that way you may correct it by manipulating his lips to turn outward. also do not be afraid that you are covering his nose while nursing, as an infant's nostrills flanges out to get some air during bfing.
