This is a little off topic but DH & I have my mother watching our DS while we have a little time to ourselves in RI. We are driving to Providence with the idea of spending some time in Newport as well. We are driving our new CR-V up from Long Island. Since this is last minute a lot places are booked and overpriced this time of year for Newport (why we are staying in Providence). What key things should DH and I check out in Providence? What mansions are the best in Newport and what places do you recommend to eat at in both? We are arriving on a Saturday in August and leaving on a Tuesday. Thank you!
Re: Where to go?
If you are going to be here on August 14th or 28th, I'd recommend WaterFire. It's a free event that has a really neat mood to it-- the website does not do it justice, you really have to be there to experience it. If you have money to burn, book a gondola ride during the event.

If you do choose to go, you can park at Providence Place Mall (across the street for up to 3 hours for $1. Providence Place itself is a pretty nice mall. It has shopping, movies, restaurants, and an IMAX theatre. I don't know what your scene is, but there is a Dave & Buster's in the mall, too. On the east side (Thayer Street) there are neat little shops. Many people enjoy eating on Federal HIll, the city's Italian section. I don't know too much about Newport, but I know that you can get tickets to see multiple properties. I've heard good things about Green Animals Topiary Gardens, which is part of the Newport Preservation society (along with the mansions). Also, check out cliffwalk- a walking trail behind the mansions along the shoreline.
