bday party food

I posted this earlier in the week, but I think it got lost in the shuffle (that, or I'm one-star-worthy and no one wanted to answer).  What are some good appetizers to have for a first bday party?  I'm thinking fruit skewers as one thing, but I'm not sure what else.  The party is outside, and it runs from 2-5, if that helps.  Thanks!

Re: bday party food

  • Corn Dip:

3 cans of Mexican or fiesta Corn

    1/2 cup of sour cream

    1/2 cup of mayo

    1 batch of green onions

    Cheddar Cheese

Cumin to taste (I put lots)

Frito dippers.  I usually just double the recipe and eye the sour cream, mayo or cheese.  I just keep testing it until I think it tastes right.

  • I'm just going to keep going because I love party foods. ;-)

I made these for the 4th but they could easily be done in ANY color. I just bought vanilla dip chips from Joann's and then you buy whatever color food coloring there as well. It's so easy but they turn out soooo cute! I know you said you're doing fruit kabobs but....

My sister and I make these all the time....they may not sound appetizing but they are so freaking good! We use cornbeef instead of roast beef and we use regular cream cheese and put garlic salt on them before rolling up.

  • I always go simple for stuff like this, especially if it's outside.  I'd just have chips, pretzels, chips & salsa, that kind of stuff.  If you have appetizers that need to be kept warm or cold, you might run into trouble outside because the weather can be so unpredictable.

  • I would keep it easy for an outside party too.  Veggie/dip tray, fruit/dip tray, assorted chips and pretzels.  Maybe a make-your-own sandwich buffet too (deli meats, breads, cheeses, sandwich toppings, condiments).
  • I agree with keeping it simple for an outside party. Fruit skewers, veggie tray, chips, pretzels, maybe a homemade Chex mix or nuts. If you want something heavier, you could do finger sandwiches.

  • We did a veggie tray and a fruit tray last year, and will probably do the same this year.  Last year, we had City Barbecue cater the event (thankfully because it rained all day and a grill out was out of the question), and this year we are ordering in pizza because Brenna loves it.  No need to get fancy IMO.  The adults like whatever is there, and the kids could care less.  Have fun!
