I am working on building a stash in my freezer by pumping. I have a couple of questions:
1. I am feeding about every 3 to 4 hours based on his schedule and mine. I nurse on each side and then pump on each side - How long should I pump on each side for?
2. I am pumping after I feed him. Thoughts?
3. How many times should I pump a day while still feeding him?
I am currently just pumping twice a day, because my nipples cannot handle much more than that. But I am open to increasing that if need be. Just need some experienced suggestions/thoughts.
TIA!
Re: Pumping questions...
1. I would probably feed fully on one side, then fully pump the other. Reason being that if you swtich mid-feed, then the baby isn't getting the hindmilk, and instead you are only pumping hindmilk. It would be better if the baby is draining one side, and you are draining the other through the pump. (Unless you feel like you are draining each side already with the feed, then I am not sure how much you will really get from a pumping session right after a feed).
2. See above. Also, I would probably wait about an hour after a feed - that way, you have some time to build up to pump, then still have some time to build up before the next feed. Your body will regulate to produce more to accomodate this, so don't be discouraged when you don't get much in the beginning from a pump.
3. I think I only did 1 pumping session in the morning - that was when I was most full and felt like I coudl get the most. It let me build a small stash, but I didn't feel pressure to do it any more. I have also heard of people doing a night pump. Just whatever is comfortable for you. It's probably best to do it when you feel the fullest, so you know you can be the most efficient. I think twice a day is plenty while you are still BFing. It's not worth trying to heal from the nipple destruction! lol.
The only thing I can answer is how long you should pump for.
I got this information from kellymom.com and I've read the same thing on other sites when I was EPing for ds. They say to keep pumping for 2-5 minutes after the you get the lasts drops of milk.
This will increase your supply, so just be careful that you don't get too engorged.
