**Breezy Lives** re: tongue-tie

Hi!  I just read your post below about your bf frustrations.  My DD is tongue-tied as well and we have been through hell and back over the last six weeks.  It took us three weeks of breastfeeding around the clock, and no weight gain, before we finally figured out that the tongue-tie was the problem.

The pedi gave us a number for an oral surgeon to have it clipped, but he refused to do it on a baby that young!  I've called four other oral surgeons and they won't do it either!  I was in tears and so upset over it. I don't know how they just don't GET IT, my baby was unable to eat enough!  :-(

Finally, I started giving DD a bottle in addition to breastfeeding.  It took her awhile to get the hang of it, but now she is gaining weight like a champ.

Unfortunately, I can't keep up with her demands, since pumping for the bottle and breastfeeding isn't enough milk for her.  So, I've had to supplement with formula.  It's so sad and I wish that we didn't have to.

I am shocked that your pedi just clipped your DS's tongue just like that.  I WISH my pedi would do that.  Do you by any chance live in Jersey??  I'd love to go to your pedi and have it done.  I'm so glad that you were able to get this fixed.  I'm still looking for an oral surgeon that will do it, but maybe I should start calling pediatricians as well.

Sorry this is so long!!  But, as you can tell, I was really excited to find someone who is/was going through what I am going through.

  • Sorry, I'm butting in. If there is a dental school in the area, maybe you can call there and see if they know anyone who will do it. It might save you a few calls.

  • I don't know if there is, but I can look into it.  Thanks!
  • I would call dental schools and pediatricians.  If done early enough, it is an IN OFFICE procedure.  They don't need any more anesthetic than a little spray on the tongue!  There aren't nerve endings, there is hardly any blood flowing there.  If they wait, it's much more major surgery!  UGH!  I'm so angry for you.

I'm actually in Indiana, or I'd send you to my pedi!!

I EPed for 2 weeks while my nipples healed, plus DS stopped latching after the procedure.

Have you worked with an LC at all?  They might be able to refer you to a BF friendly doc, and they can help you re-establish BF if/when you're ready.

I'm so so sorry you're dealing with this.  I was furious when we found out - I had said repeatedly in the hospital that it hurt and something wasn't right and no one listened :-(

  • We went through this as well and I was having so much pain in the beginning. It was amazing how right after DD had her tongue clipped, it was almost pain free! We were actually referred to an Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist who did the procedure in his office. Perhaps your pedi can at least give you a referral to an ENT specialist?

I sure hope you can find a doctor that will help correct this problem for you and your DS. It really made such a big difference for us to have it done so early (DD was about 2 weeks old).

  • Thanks ladies!  I can't tell you how helpful it was seeing your posts.  I had just about given up on finding someone to do the procedure, but your posts gave me hope.  I contacted my lactation consultant, and sure enough, she had a recommendation for an oral surgeon that would do it.  I should have gone to her in the first place, but I didn't even think of her!

DD and I have an appointment on Monday morning.  I am so excited to finally have all of this behind us!

    Thanks again!
