Allergies...help!!

So I have always had allergies...but they would really only hit me *maybe* once a month and only last about a day. Since I've been pregnant I've been getting allergy attacks at least 2-3 times a week each last about a day. I am pretty much misreable. My OB told me I could take Claritin (just not claritin), Zyrtec, or Benedryl. Claritin does nothing for me and I've taken benedryl a couple of times but only at night otherwise I get no sleep. The benedryl helps clear me up for the night but I still wake up stuffy and feeling horrible. I also don't want to be popping pills all the time even though the OB said it was ok. Anyone out there experiance this "surge" in allergies while pregnant and if so, any other remedies help? A friend suggested getting some eucalyptus oil and sniffing that throughout the day but I haven't been able to find any. Any other suggestions would be great!

Re: Allergies...help!!

  • When I got pregnant with my first, I stopped using my regular allergy meds (which I take daily).  I got so overcome with the allergies that I looked like I had the flu (people kept asking me that!).  I spoke with my OB, and she told me to get back on my meds.  So I took Flonase and Claritin throughout both my pregnancies.  If I go without one or the other, I am a mess.  So I'm in the meds camp, if you really need it.

Hope you find something that works for you and that you feel better soon.

  • My allergies are very mild, but I have noticed that I'm stuffier at night than usual and my nose is also runnier.  However, it's not that bad that it would require meds.  If your OB said it was okay, then take it when you need it. There are certain things that don't pass through the placenta so it won't affect the baby.  I would stay away from the eucalyptus oil.  A coworker uses it on her tissues when she has a cold and she offered me some one of those days that I was stuffy, but then we saw that it stated right on the bottle that pregnant women shouldn't use it.
  • When I started TTC, I had a few allergy episodes back to back.  Allergist purposely gave me Zyrtec b/c it is safe during pg (it is the only med that works for me ASAP).  OB and RE also confirmed its safety.  Rhinocort nasal spray (RX needed) is also safe.

::knock on wood:: I haven't had any attacks in a while, but always carry Zyrtec w/ me b/c it is a lifesaver.  I have noticed that I have a lot more mucus than normal though, which I read is normal.

    Hope you feel better.

  • Just remembered  that I also used the BreatheRight strips at night for stuffiness through both pregnancies.  Could not breathe at night without it, especially at the end.  Since neither of my meds were decongestants, only antihistamines, this was the best thing in the world!!
  • This week I have had the worst allergy attack that I've had in YEARS. I actually thought I had the flu but I was not running a fever. I've been feeling absolutely HORRIBLE and can't stop sneezing.

I finally took a Claritin today and feel loads better. I can tell the Claritin is starting to wear off because my coughing is starting again and eyes are starting to itch/burn more.

Unfortunately I think Zachary inherited my bad luck & is experiencing the same allergies too since he's been sneezing and coughing as well, and also has a bit of a runny nose, but no fever. I feel bad for him. :(
