Pain in Fingers/Wrists after delivery

Anyone have this? I delivered Monday and it feels like when my fingers would swell pretty bad at the end of the pregnancy and it would hurt the joints to bend them/make a fist. It's worst when I first wake up but I feel it throughout the day.

Re: Pain in Fingers/Wrists after delivery

  • I had this at the end of my pregnancy and after the LOs were born.  I am glad to say its gone now but did take a few months.  Now i occasionally have issues with my shoulders (started after delivery) but i think its bc i got so out of shape during the pregnancy and now im lifting them so often and using my shoulders in a way i never had before.

I knew at one time what caused the pain in the hands and wrists but i forget now.  In my case it did go away and im sure it will get better for you.  And once the swelling is down you will feel like a new person! I dont even want to share the photo of me in the hospital after all the pitocin YIKES!!!! I lookd like a Macy day parade balloon!

  • I had pain in my fingers and wrists too. It actually was worse after I had the babies than it was during pregnancy. It had to do with pressure from fluid retention. It should get better. In my case, because I BF and had to cup the breast for my DDs, it got worse but I don't think that's the norm.

  • I developed this a month or two after I delivered...no idea what it's all about!

  • I Only have a singleton but I was lurking so I thought I would answer.. I had the EXACT same issue after ds was born.. more in my left hand than right (I had 2 iv's in my left hand/arm) My fingers would be really stiff and hard to bend and it would get better through the day as well.. almost like carpel tunnel syndrome I am guessing?

I had carpel tunnel type symptoms after I delivered.  I think it lasted for a few months, but then got better.  I know some people have issues during pg, but I don't remember that.  But, I was also on bedrest and not doing a ton.  I guess I started noticing it more when I was lifting DDs all the time.

  • OMG - I have the same issue, it started right before I delivered and was horrible for the first 2 months. It is still really painful and stiff but not quite as bad. I used to be worried I would drop the babies because it would spasm if I picked them up too quick...so weird!!

  • I'm totally lurking over here, but I couldn't not reply.

Problems like that are common in new moms -- a combination of pregnancy/nursing hormones plus all the repetitive motions of lifting newborns.  Carpel tunnel is common as is something called dequervain's tendonitis (which I have).

I'd recommend seeing an orthopedic surgeon -- the one I saw specializes in hands.  I don't know what I would have done without mine -- I had to have two cortizone shots into the bone on my wrist.

I hope y'all don't mind me butting in!

  • OMG, my fingers KILLED after I delivered. I figured it was a fluid thing early on, but it seems like it lasted for awhile even after that. It eventually went away though.

Of course, now my feet kill when I first get up...but I figure it's just because I still have quite a bit of weight to lose. ;p
