Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DD full on CHOKED on pureed food

We tried to give DD butternut squash for the first time (she didn't have any interest in cereals).  It was homemade by me and very very finely pureed.  I checked 40 times for any lumps and there were none.  But she still full on choked on it.  I don't mean aspirated a little and started coughing, I mean she was choking to the point where i had to grab her out of her seat and before I could get to do the heimlich she dislodged it herself.  anyone had this hapen with purees?  Do you think i should be worried or do you think it was just a new experience and she didn't know what to do?  It was so freaking scary!

Re: DD full on CHOKED on pureed food

  • Babies tend to gag/choke more often on purees because they literally suck them to the back of their throats rather than have the chance to test their gag reflex before they get to the back.

I wouldn't give up though. Maybe try loading less on the spoon and waiting until her mouth is completely clear before giving her the next 'bite.'

I do BLW, but I find the more calm you stay, the more calm baby is to work it back up.

  • Every time we have given DD a new food, she has gagged really bad on it. I think it is the new taste.

  • DS did this with peas.  They tend to be a bit thicker so I just backed off on them.

  • Dd1 did that with the first thing I gave her, mashed bananas I think. I ditto the pp, smaller bits and wait to make sure the mouth is clear before giving her more. Dd2 makes this terrible face anytime I give her something new, like "dear god why would you do that?" and lets it drool out but then wants more. I think each baby explores new foods differently. Dd2 does the sucking on fine purees too.

  • Mine has a terrible gag reflex to the point where she turns purple.  I'm trying to find a solution to it because she does this even with watered down purees
