2nd Trimester

Back pains already! I need some tips on soothing it.

I have an abnormally curved back to start with, the lower back dips further in than most "normal" backs do. This has always been a tiny bit of a problem at work since I sit at a computer desk practically ALL day long.

Almost 20 weeks now and I have to get up and walk almost every 30 minutes at least to soothe my severe back pain and I know it will only progressively get worse. The only way to feel better is to lay down for about 10 minutes and let the pain subside. It returns almost immediately after I return to my desk.

Is there anything I can use that can help with this pain? I want to work up until the day of delivery so I can spend more time with my baby but I can't see it happening with this stupid pain and it drives me bananas.

  • I suffer from sciatic during my pregnancies and at my 16 week visit I asked my doctor what I could do. He said to said to sit in a bath, or use a shower massager, or a heating pad. Not sure if your pain is the same as sciatic so I don't know if that'll help you but good luck!!

  • Have you thought about seeing a chiropractor?  I was a gymnast and my back used to have more of an S curve in the same way you describe (if I read correctly).  Mine is much more "normal" now.  I would go see one and see what they say.  They won't be able to take x-rays now...obviously, but they may be able to help you.  I've also been using a heating pad when mine hurts.  Do you do anything while asleep to get some relief?  Like sleep with a pillow between your knees and/or a wedge for your tummy so you aren't twisting to get more support.  HTH.

  • You already had some great advice, but I figured I would add.  My DH suffers from the same issue: Sway Back.  His Dad is a chiropractor, so they were able to realize the issue early on (he never crawled as a baby, and because of that, his hips and back didn't get the proper development).  Anyway, I definitely agree that you should see a chiropractor.  DH's back gets worse if he doesn't get adjusted once about every two weeks.  His feet get really bad, and the pain just shoots up into his back.  Hopefully you can get some relief from this!  Good luck!!

  • Tennis ball massage? Put a tennis ball on a dowel and run it side to side or up and down. My back is killing me and I need a deep massage for mine!

Whenever my back hurts, I can usually get some relief by going on all fours to do pelvic tilts.. also the child's pose is great.

  • I have been going to a chiropractor for adjustments. She has me using an ice pack for 15 minutes 2-3 times a day to keep my back from getting too loose. Apparently in some cases heat can make it worse. I would recommend a chiropractor becasue everyones back is different and what works for some of us does not work for everyone. I always feel better after a visit with the doc. I would also try a lumbar pillow for support when you are in your desk. Even when i sit on the couch i have to sit with some sort of support behind me.

  • I have very similar pains but I see a chiropractor regularly.  Mine also suggested that I eat a lot of pineapple because it has a natural anti-inflamitory and drink Chamomile tea because it is a natural muscle relaxer.
  • Have you been doing stretches every day? That should help. Also, walking with a 1-2 inch heel, rather than wearing heels or flat shoes should make a difference.

Sorry you are in so much pain, I hope it eases up soon!
