flying with a newborn?

Wondering if any momma's out there have flown with a newborn...my husband and I are moving from CO to PA when LO will be approx. 2 wks old (job transfer). I've decided to fly with my mom (who lives in PA and we'll be staying at her house until our household goods arrive) and the baby and I'm wondering the easiest way to do this? Stroller with carseat and check stroller? Check carseat or carry on? Sling and check carseat? It will only take my hubby 2-3 days to drive (we have a dog) so I would be w/o stroller for that amount of time, which is OK with me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Re: flying with a newborn?

  • newborns are easy on a plane.

I'd gate check the stroller and infant carseat if you need to take them with you.  Planes are pretty much booked these days, but if there's a spare seat, they may let you take the seat on the plane.  I generally don't like taking strollers on a plane, but when they're newborns, it's sometimes easier to have a lightweight one (snap 'n' go) in the airport.

You'll have to fold the stroller and put the carseat and stroller through the x-ray, just be prepared.

I'd also bring the sling though.  You can't wear it for take off/landing, but it may be nice to have during the flight.

  • I flew with my son at 4 weeks and it was no problem. I gate checked the stroller and carseat, because the stroller was awesome to have in the airport during my layover. I also kept him in the Baby Bjorn most of the time (you can use it during take off and landing) because I was by myself and could have my hands free to do everything else.?
  • I agree with pp, but make sure you check the airline's age limit.   For SW, infants have to be at least 14 days old.

  • Our pedi doesn't want us to fly until at LO is at least 2 mos old.  He is being FF, so he isn't as immune to catching something than a EBF baby.  I really, really want to fly with DS to Cali.  He will be 6 wks when we go, but instead we are driving for about 3 days to get there.  If only he was born a few weeks earlier! *sigh*

     Good luck with your move!
