Help I need some real life input....reflux

My LO is 9wks old (10days adjusted), while in the NICU he had a few episodes with reflux where his heart rate dropped but it corrected itself in a few seconds. Now he has been home for a month and since this past Monday he has been having apnea episodes with his spit-ups because his nose become so congested he cannot breathe. I took him to his pediatrician on Tuesday I was given specific instructions that should cut down on the episodes which I been following to a T but there seems to be no improvement. The Dr. has not mentioned anything about changing formula I am wondering if I should I am willing to try anything.

My question is this ppl who have been through/or going through reflux what helped and how long before your little one was able to get past this hurdle.

I should mention he has been on an apnea monitor since last night which did not go off on his last apnea episode.

Is your baby on reflux medication?  That's what worked for us.  Along with elevating the mattress, holding upright for 30 minutes after a feeding as well.  Maybe take your baby to a GI specialist.  It's an issue if he has episodes during a feeding.  A swallow study maybe should happen, they an see if there's aspiration as well.

    Good luck!

  • We hold my baby at an angle while feeding.  And then we hold him upright or at an angle for at least 20 minutes after a feeding.  We also put him in his Baby Einstein bouncer after his feedings.  He has done better.

This is a picture of my baby sitting in the "chair" after a feeding.

  • Ug, reflux. I'm going to preface this with Evan's case was pretty extreme. We didn't start to see improvement until he was around 17-18months old. Medicines seemed to either help briefly, or not do a whole heck of a lot. What ended up helping him the most in the end was a diet change. He can't handle corn syrup or pasteurized dairy (also rare), so pregestimil was the start to his answer. We also did a lot of keeping him upright, like he didn't lay horizontally at ALL for months. I think most people when they're going to try a formula change either go with a sensitive stomach formula or alimentum/nutramagen for first ones to try.
  • Thanks ladies for your input. I just got back home. I called the pedi today about the two apnea episodes, he told me to come to the office, once I got there I was sent to the ER where he was admitted for mostly observation. I like what the pedi @ the hospital was saying he will change the formula from milk base as well as change from Zantac to Prevacid also consult with a GI whom I will continue to see after he is discharged. I miss my baby to pieces but I have to keep reminding myself it is for the best and its only for a day or two

It must be so hard for you to have your baby at the hospital but he's in the best place where he needs to be to get him on track.  My babies are on Prevacid and that was the miracle drug that fixed my daughter up so she can be discharged from the NICU!  The GI specialist is a great idea.  Keep us posted!

  • LO still in the hospital but things are looking a lot better he has had 2 feedings so far with no spit-ups so far. He has started the new formula as well as Prevacid so now I am praying that he is getting better. I know he will not be cured overnight but at least I am seeing some kinda improvment.

Now the bad news is that he had 2 Brady episodes last night and 1 apnea, he also did an upper GI study which shows that he is definately refluxing.

  • Get a wedge for under the mattress and give the meds at least 2 weeks to start working their magic.   For us it took a couple different tries before we got the perfect med combo for Brendan.  I know reflux sucks the big one and hope you get some relief soon.
  • LO still in the hospital, he had one apnea episode last night which wasn't as bad as the ones the night before. He is still eating well and taking the new formula nicely - Pregestimil. The doctors had told me upon admission that he would be in for 24 - 48 hrs, 48 hrs will be this afternoon, I am hoping they will not release him until he has had at least two nights without episode. I am missing him at home and going back and forth from the hospital is no fun but I know that it is better for all that he is here where they are better equipped to deal with the episodes.
