poor warner has had a rough couple of days. he has 3 molars coming in at one time and has been drooling non-stop and chewing on his hands all week. and he's developed a cough--no nasal congestion, just a nasty cough. and he's had a penile adhesion that yesterday decided to un-adhese (pretty sure that's not a real word). But basically his circumcision scar didn't heal properly. We took him to a pediatric urologist awhile back and he told us that it would fix itself this way, but I wasn't expecting it so soon. So his penis is all red and inflamed and of course I had to clean around where the adhesion was and DH basically had to hold him down for me to do that, he (warner) was screaming and crying--it was traumatic for everyone :-(
Then he got sent home from daycare yesterday with a temp of 101.8, so I'm home with him today. He was plenty happy yesterday afternoon (expect for when mommy was torturing him--srsly, I might have nightmares, it was awful). I gave him some ibuprofen and his temp came right down and was normal when he went to bed. But it's back up over 101 now and he had diarrhea this morning. He's happy again this morning, although he's a little sleepy since he didn't sleep well last night.
He doesn't seem "sick" at all except his cough...so do you think the temp is just due to teething? I guess if he still has a temp tomorrow we'll go to the doctor.
Re: fever--sick or just teething?
I'm by no means an expert, because we are sooo not there yet, but I have heard that teething fevers are usually 100 or less.....anything more than that is from some sort of "sick"
but again, don't quote me or anything
hope he feels better soon!!!
I'd watch him closely... it's probably something viral associated with the cough.
But, due to the penis thing, I'd be concerned about an infection (which could cause a temp...). Especially if the area is all red & swollen. I'm not even sure what a penile adhesion is... but, I'm assuming it involves some sort of open sore on the penis. ouch. poor thing!
thanks, I was wondering about the possibility of something viral.
and for his other issue, it's not so much an open sore, really just raw skin. and fortunately, it looks a lot better this morning.
also, I need to amend my statement about him being happy--I now believe he has split personalities. he's going from totally happy to totally unhappy in about .5 seconds and then back again. ugh.
Aw, poor baby. And poor mommy - I hate when we have to "hurt" our kids to make them better. My DD #2 doesn't even like to have her nose wiped, she acts like I'm torturing her.
If the ibuprofen is controlling the fever, that is a good thing. I think you're wise to take him to the doc if it continues.
I would agree that most teething fevers are around 100 and maybe just a little over. My DD had a "wet" cough and a fever of 100.6 when her molars were coming in. I called the pedi and she said they don't recommend giving them anything if they have a fever that low and are not in any discomformt.
I would call the doctor anyways just to make sure its not anything worse.
Hope he feels better!
It could be something that's going around. The pedi told me that there were a lot of summer colds being passed about. DD has been sick for 3 weeks with a virus we just can't kick. It started as a sore throat and cold and now it is diarrhea for the last week. She hasn't been sleeping well (won't go down, up really early) and is cranky most of the time. She has a low grade fever on and off and she also won't eat meals just snacks. The pedi says that they can't do much for a virus, if this continues into next week we are going back for another look-see with the doctor. She is just plain miserable and I won't lie, I miss my sleep.
ditto KLS re: bowels. I have always been told fevers around 100ish as well. Tugging ears also can be a sign of teething.
However, we went to the ER on Memorial Day night when Ben developed croup (first time ever) - which is going around apparently. We got sick right after and from what I hear a lot of people have been coming down with summer colds.
