Postpartum ? Mesh panties

What's the deal with mesh panties for postpartum use?  I keep reading mixed reviews.  Either people love them since they don't have to throw away their regular undies, they keep the super sized hospital pad in place, and they are sooooo comfortable; or they HATE them since there's no way to get them to fit right, they itch, you might as well wear an old pair of undies you don't mind throwing away or a pair of Depends.

So what's the verdict?  I started looking into this because I saw it as part of a postpartum gift for new moms and was curious.  I won't get any from the hospital since I'm planning a home birth so I'm wondering how "essential and lifesaving" these are, LOL.

Re: Postpartum ? Mesh panties

  • first off, they are disposable!  I bought some cheap granny panties thinking i would wear those post-delivery, but no way!  there is so much leakage down there!!

secondly, i delivered vaginally so the mesh panties were big enough to hold an ice pack down there too :)

i didn't think they were uncomfortable and i think i even brought an extra pair home with me from the hospital, but i never used it

  • I'm pretty sure I worse mesh panties for a week or two pp.  I bled a lot for a long time, and needed huge pads.  Mesh panties were perfect!  And FYI, you can wash and dry them, so make sure you take yours home from the hospital!  I used the same three or four pairs for that long by washing/drying every two days. :D

  • They will give them to you at the hospital.  With my DD's I used them for the first night and then switched into some cheap comfy panties I bought at costco that I didn't care about.  I will probably do the same this time.  I found the mesh ones to be uncomfortable and hard to get to stay in the right place.
  • I loved them.  They are pretty cheap (since you said you won't get them from a hospital) so I'd say they are worth a try.  Have some other pairs around that you don't mind ruining, though, just in case.
  • Yes I've looked into buying them and the cost is very low.  Which is nice since I'll be buying a bunch of the goodies that you get in the hospital before you leave.
  • I hated hated hated them. I took them off the second I could walk (c/s and couldnt walk well for 12 ish hrs), and put on some big granny panties I bought. I don't like the mesh material.

  • LOL.  I forgot all about the mesh panties.
  • Oh man I'm one of those people who loved the mesh undies. I had a c/s and they didn't rub up against my insion. And even though the hospital pads are huge and a god send I did leak a few times. I took handfuls those puppies when I left the hospital, they were so comfy.
  • I am also a mesh  fan.  I got them after my surgery and wore them till they eventually fell apart.  I thought they were extremely comfortable.  I say worth the cost to try them out.
  • I only wore them when I was in the hospital. They were nice cause they really stretched to get the giant pad and ice pack in place. I didn't think they were uncomfortable.  I wasn't bleeding much after 2 days so I wore granny panties at home since I was just using light flow pads

    This exactly!!!

  • First, being a first time mommy too, I don't have much to add to what you said, but...

An ice pack?! There is an ice pack involved?! Every time I see little tidbits like this I can decide if knowledge about postpartum life falls in the "knowledge is power" category or the "ignorance is bliss" category.
