I know every one's doctor will have different rules, but for those who are runners, I'm curious to see if you were able to keep running or if you found it uncomfortable. For those who are distance runners, how did you modify your training?
I usually run about 4 miles 4 times a week. I told my doctor this at my first appointment, and she said she would prefer if I do something less high impact, like walking, elliptical, yoga, etc, starting immediately! I was totally disappointed, but I'm going to do what my doctor says. My FI bought me rollerblades for my birthday (the big 3-0 TODAY!!) so I'm going to try those out!
I was running about 25 miles per week when I got pregnant this time. Because I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix with my previous pregnancy, I was told to stop running at 6 weeks. I was disappointed, but I obviously will follow the rules.
However, I think if you aren't high risk, there are plenty of women that continue to run. I know a lot of women talk about it on the Health & Exercise board, so maybe ask there?

I am a runner, but haven't run for 2 weeks - since I found out.
The first week it just didn't feel right to me to be running - so I listened to my body. I had fully intended on starting up again this week, reducing the frequency and distance, and pace if need be, but the heat has been unbearable.
I have been on the elliptical, and will attempt running when it cools off.
I have kept up my running with the same frequency and distance, but I'm definitely going slower. I also take frequent walking breaks, I can't wait for this heat wave to be over!!
I was running about 30-35 miles per week before I found out I was pregnant. My doctor told me it was completely fine to continue running just no marathon training and to do easy runs. So now, I just listen to my body...there are days when I do feel like running, so I'll run slow and do a short distance (with some walking in between) and then there are days when I just can't run, so I'll walk instead. We found out wer're having twins 2 weeks ago, so it makes me even more cautious...but I always listen to my body and make sure to get lots of rest in between.
I was doing about 20 miles a week when I got pregnant, and my doctor said it was fine to keep doing everything the same but that I would get tired a lot quicker. So far that's been true, I'm only 6 weeks but I cut it off at 2 miles per run now. Although last time I ran I had some spotting after and I must admit I haven't run since (that was tuesday) Maybe we should try swimming for next 7 months, personally I won't be swimming in a straight line but it's worth a shot
I was running 20-30 miles/week before I got pregnant with my son. In the 1st tri I was too dizzy/sick to run so I used the exercise bike at the gym because I could sit down. In 2nd tri I felt much better and I was back running. In 3rd tri I was having major leg pain from circulation issues after running, so I switched to the elliptical machine at the gym. And I lifted weights all the way through. This pregnancy I feel similar, but I can't get to gym as easily with a LO at home, so I've been walking/jogging on my treadmill at home before DS wakes up in the morning. Just listen to your body and take care of yourself, and don't push yourself too hard.

There was a woman on here who had a baby around the same time as me that ran a marathon at 24 weeks or something like that. She got a lot of crap from other bumpies but I think she was a very serious runner before getting pregnancy and she wasn't high risk.
monlyn9 - marathon training is exactly what I had in mind. I have a number for NYC and run Boston every year (charity runner -- I'm not fast, but have endurance). Now that I'm expecting in early March, I'm thinking both might be out of the question. I actually haven't run since Boston this past spring because of a foot injury, so everything's up in the air!
I hadn't noticed the health & exercise board until now - will check it out!
Oooh I ran NY last year. Love that race. I got declined this year so hence the pregnancy.
I ran through my last two pregnancies and the 1st tri is always hard to keep up with just because of fatigue. 2nd tri I felt like Paula and could take on the world. I ran through my 3 tri as well and did a 5k the day I turned 40weeks in the hope of going into labor (it didn't work). I did run slower and I did stop for more water breaks. I plan on running through this pregnancy too.
I also wonder if the dr.'s that say "no" to running are physically fit themselves? My previous dr. was really into fitness and hot yoga and encouraged me to keep up with whatever I was doing.
Mom to G 10.23.06, H 9.04.08 and a baby in heaven 10.07.10 (23w due to chromosome deletion)
Dr said as long as I did before, I'm fine. I've done marathons and other types of distance running before.
I don't run sub-8 miles anymore AT ALL. I get too tired. The pace has slowed to 9:30-9:45. I run 3-4 miles at a time during the week and it's been a good balance for me, and 5-6 on weekends. I can't do 8 or more. I dont feel like myself or as well after.
And the humidity in MN has been awful and I started to get a weird reaction (even though I run at 4:45AM) with puffiness and my eyes and them being bloodshot. Have 2nd appt (11 w, 5 days by then) and I hope to ask her about this - but it felt like overheating-which I never had before.
Sounds like most women here posting for you are in shape. Personally, depending on your size, I wouldn't run a marathon pregnant unless you are an elite runner (over 50 miles per week). Marathons usually start at 8 and if youre in good shape and it takes you 3:30-4:15 to run one - with the heat, humidity and extra weight, trying to remain hydrated, needed to balance eating during running for fuel-I would think it's just not good for the body.
Last time, I only ran until about 8 weeks and then stopped because of the tiredness and crampy feeling. I worked out throughout the pregnancy and think it helped with my energy and general sense of wellbeing. This time I hope to run longer. I ran a 5k last week. I notice myself getting out of breath a lot faster, I'm slower already, and I will probably start to take more walking breaks, but I want to keep with it.
One of the trainers at my gym is pregnant with her SIXTH child and she works it hard all the time. I talked to her and she just emphasized listening to your body and doing what you feel up to on any given day. She did a triathlon in her 2nd tri. She's my inspiration!

This.
Especially the part about the heat wave being over!

I run over 35 miles per week.
First pg - and my routine has changed.
