3rd Trimester

Ugh! 9 pound gain in 2 WEEKS!!!

So, I went to my MW/OB yesterday for the 36 week appointment and found out that I gained 9 lbs in 2 weeks. I've been eating right, exercising as much as my body is letting me. However, I've had some major swelling in my hands and my right foot, calf and ankle. MW checked my blood pressure and it was perfectly normal, in fact, better than normal. She was concerned about the swelling but my blood pressure being very good. And, I'm measuring a week ahead. Next week, they're going to do a growth ultrasound to check how big LO is and if she's measuring slightly bigger than where she should be, they want to induce me around the 27th! I'm super excited about that, but the weight gain scares me and so does the swelling.

Sorry, just needed to vent a little.

  • the weight gain could just be water weight; who cares anyways!  A healthy baby is far more important than an extra 10 lbs! I have gained more than I thought and was actually put off of work 3 mths ago due to water rentention but no pre-e and am now 40 wks with a healthy baby inside of me!  You hear so many issues lately, I would gain even more if I had to - just to end up with a healthy LO!  I think waaaay too much pressure is put on us prego's to keep our weight down, unless there are health risks to the weight gain--try not to worry!!!

I think because of the heat, there will be some water weight in there as well. As long as your doctor said that it's OK, I wouldn't worry about it.

I gained like 3 lbs in a week (last week). I know it's not 4.5 lbs, but that's actually more than what I have gained in average in a month throughout this pregnancy, so I was shocked as well. Don't worry about it!!!

  • This happened to me at my appt last Tuesday.  I put on 10 lbs in 2 weeks.  BP was fine, urine was fine - I really think it's just the swelling.  I'm crossing my fingers that I will have kept it down at my next appt on Tuesday.

  • I bet it's water weight. I had absolutely no diet change (I eat the same thing every day except for dinner) and between 38 and 39 weeks I was up 7 pounds. Then this week I didn't gain any, so I fully believe it is swelling/water weight. Try not to worry, it should come right off.

  • I was just talking about weight gain with my SO. 10 lbs is a lot. I keep gaining 4 lbs every 2 weeks and I didnt gain any the 1st or 2nd

  • this exactly happend to me! I gained 8 pounds in 2 weeks!! but I had really started to swell my ob was not so nice about it he made me feel like crap like I was gorging my self or something which I am not, and have had a really healthy weight gain so far and still look tiny but that week I had had just started to swell really bad so I assume its water weight even though he didnt say it was!

My OB had made me feel absolutely awful about my weight gain before, so I started exclusively seeing the MW. I've been doing everything I'm supposed to, but I guess that doesn't always matter. Hopefully, all of us that have weird swelling will have it go back down soon!

  • Same here 8 lbs in 2 weeks but I was so swollen.    Last visit I was only up 1 lb in 2 weeks.   My OB wasn't worried about it so neither am I.

  • It could be water weight....

I gained nothing for a month, then 5 pounds in a week. WTH. My doctor just shrugged and said it was probably water weight, since my blood pressure was completely normal.

I actually think I lost a couple of pounds this week.  We've pretty much given up on my weight gain since the baby is gaining like crazy.

  • I have gained over 50lbs and didnt put on my first till 17 weeks. I did have an 8 lb two week gain and my doctor sent me for an U/S which showed my fluids were high (20) so she said laying on my left side and no more working out. I ignored it because I thought it didnt make sense and had a 4 week gain!! Last 3 weeks I listened.....even though it sucks and I gained 1 lb, 2 lbs and 1 lb. So if it is fluids then only laying around (on left side which drains your kidney) or swimming really helps (which pushes fluids into your veins so you can pee them out).

Dont worry you will lose it all!

  • I gained 9 lbs in 3 weeks, then lost 3 lbs in 1 week, then gained the 3 lbs back the next week.  My Dr thinks its mostly water weight.  I know I've been swelling due to the heat so it makes sense to me, and my blood pressure is still fine.  I think its normal for a lot of us at this time of year when we are this far along.

  • I think it's just water weight. Eating a ton of watermelon worked for me! I gained 4lbs in a week, then lost 7lbs in two weeks after eating watermelon everyday.
  • I just got put on bedrest - I gained 12 pounds in 3 weeks...water retention!!!!! UGH :(

I have a growth u/s scheduled for next week

  • With DS, I gained 13 lbs between my 33 and 35 week check-up.  My legs and feet also swelled up like marshmallows on a campfire during that time.  It was completely just water retention, but it was still hard to see that # on the scale!  For me, it got worse before it got better, but about 2 weeks after I had DS (yes, it really took 2 weeks for the swelling to go down), I finally had normal looking legs again!

Good luck, and know that things do return to their normal size!

  • I had the same weight gain like that in two weeks, my DR. put me on what he calls a "bark and water" diet.. eating very healthy no sugar or sodium at all and only water to drink. I actually ended up losing 4 lbs in 1 week after that, he was okay with the loss and since then I have not gained any abnormal amount.. 1-2 lbs a week only.
  • Dr. has made me feel really bad about my weight gain also. Its sooo frustrating, because i tell her how swollen i am everywhere and she keeps telling me it cant all be water weight. 2-3 pounds per month (or something like that) is normal water weight....soooo annoying.
