When did you start using a toddler pillow?

I was thinking about this for DS, but I'm still a little paranoid.  He loves pillows, though, and will lay on the couch with one.  But for sleeping is there a recommended age or just when you think DC is ready?

Re: When did you start using a toddler pillow?

  • I let Justin start using one last fall, after he turned 2.  My motivation wasn't that he turned 2, it was that he had started to use his stuffed animals as pillows so it seemed he wanted something like that.

Of course, once I gave him the pillow, he never used it.  Just kept using his animals.  He finally started using the pillow for its intended purpose just about 3 months ago.  Now, he has a full size pillow and does fine with it.  I just made sure it's a firm one, not soft enough to lose his face in.

  • DS uses this:

He's been using it for about 6 months (he turned 2 in January). We read it often, and then fold it up for his "pillow". It's not much, but he honestly does keep his head on it most of the time when he's sleeping.

  • We started at 21 months when we moved K to her big girl bed. Prior to that she had started to use her bear as a pillow in her crib. I didn't want the pillow in her bed at first but she bitched and moaned and literally threw a tantrum about it. So she has a flat, firm pillow she uses. It's not a toddler pillow, per se, it's a regular size pillow just very flat and firm.

  • I really don't remember but it was sometime between 18-24 months.  I know it was before she turned 2.  She seemed to want it and has always done fine with it.  I don't know why, but I've never really been paranoid about it.  We also use a regular, flat pillow.

  • I want to say we started using a pillow around 14-15 months.  I know it's been awhile.  He loves his pillow and won't sleep without it.  I was a paranoid freak when it came to SIDS until DS was about 1, but then I just started not to worry as much.

  • Eli started using a pillow at day care for naps shortly after he reached 1 year as they only have little mats for the kids to sleep on and he is kinda prissy and needs a soft bed.  He usually laid on top of the pillow at that age.  He started using one at home at 18 or so months.

  • Probably around 14-15 months.  She's always had a hard time sleeping at my MIL's house so one day MIL gave her a pillow like the boys had.  She slept like an angel and started asking for one in her bed at home.  She just uses a regular size pillow with no problems.

Right after Christmas, so ~16 mos?  He was using a stuffed animal too... so I felt better with him using a pillow.  He puts it under his belly and not his head, but I can't say that I'm any different....  (except I put one at my head too)

  • Probably 16 months or so. Now she has a regular pillow in her big girl bed.
