Car seat v Capsule

DH and I still can't decide on whether we should get a baby capsule for the car (suitable til 6 months) or just get a convertible car seat (one that faces the rear and then can be turned to face the front). The capsule has the benefit of being able to come in and out of the car, hopefully without waking baby. The car seat however makes much better sense financially.

Which option have you ladies gone with? Any insight would be great, I'd hoped we'd have the car seat/capsule fitted by now!!

pretty sure capsule equals infant car seat.

OP, we were debating the same thing.  Only real reason we are keeping the infant seat is because of the snap n go stroller that we can use.  If you have another stroller to use while your LO is an infant I'd say it's not necessary and you could just use the convertible seat.

  • We have both.  I like being able to take LO out without waking them if they fall asleep.  FWIW my friend had her son in the capsule until 10 months.
  • So, an infant car seat.  Yes, you sholud get an infant seat.  It makes it so much easier to transport baby from one place to another when they are infants.  There is nothing worse than having to wake them just to run into a store to run a quick errand.

    This.

Is a capsule just a car seat where the top part comes out as a baby carrier? That's what it looks like.  What's what I'm using because it came with our stroller.

I have to assume it's like the infant carseat carriers that we have here....?

  • I am assuming a capsule is an infant carrier?  If so, yes get one.  You will NOT want to wake up a sleeping infant to get him out of the car.  The carrier is safer for an infant anyways, because it is more reclined so their chin does not droop down when they sleep (which can cut off their airway)

  • We have an infant seat, what I guess you call a capsule, makes sense based on shape. It's good up to 35lbs. I want to keep her rear facing as long as possible. I'm just not comfortable with using the convertible car seat, and I like the portability of the infant seat.

  • It's really a personal preference.

We decided to go straight to a convertible seat and skip the infant seat. I don't see myself carrying the baby around in the bucket much... I intend to wear her when possible. We just researched a lot and picked convertible seats that actually fit newborns well (not all of them do.) I don't have a stroller yet, but when we get one it will be one that is suitable from birth as well.

  • Sorry ladies, yep it seems a capsule is an infant car seat. Sorry about the confusion! Thanks for the tips, I tend to agree.

  • I really loved having the infant car seat. We have the Chicco Keyfit 30 and DD was in it until 11ish months, obviously when she was getting bigger, I left it in the car and pulled her out. But, it was a lifesaver when she was little, you never want to wake a sleeping baby  Sometimes, if we went somewhere at night, we would bring her into our bedroom in the infant seat and let her sleep all night in it. Definitely worth it for us!

  • I never had an infant car seat with my older boys and don't plan to with this one either, we're going convertible from the beginning. I will wear baby a lot in a carrier and the best thing I did for my kids was teach them how to fall asleep, and eventually not wake, when being moved. I have been able to move them from the car, put on PJs, and get them in their beds without them waking. And baby wearing means more contact with baby, and that is a very good thing!!
  • I love having an infant car seat.  It's so nice to keep him/her in it when having to run errands or whatever.  It's also great for preventing people from picking baby up. If baby is in the carseat they don't usually bother him/her.  If you're holding baby they're way more likely to try to hold him/her.

This.  We will use an infant seat just because we already have one, but if I did it again I would just get another Graco My Ride 65 and use it from the start.  As is, the infant seat will rarely be used outside our car.

  • I think it completely depends on you. If this pregnancy were 1 baby we'd be getting a convertible and be done with it. I HATED DS's infant seat, and so did he, so I wound up leaving it in the car more often than not and wearing him in a wrap when we were outside the car, or just carrying him into the house. For me, that was just SO much easier! He was a happier baby in general when we switched him to the convertible. If you do decide to go straight to the convertible seat do a LOT of research. I'mnot sure what seats are available in Australia, but not all of the convertibles in the US are suitable for infants. One of the only exceptions to that would be the First Years True Fit, but, I don't know if that's an option for you or not.
