Thinking ahead

When is everyone planning on starting the pediatrician interviewing process?  I was planning on asking my OB for advice at my next appt, but thought I would ask you all too.

I guess I was thinking late 2nd tri, early 3rd tri, but have no idea how long the process takes and how long it takes to get appts for interviews.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

Re: Thinking ahead

  • I think with my first I started looking in the beggining of the third trimester.  Keep in mind if you don't find the perfect pediatrition right off the bat you can always switch.  We ended up having to switch because our original doctor moved.  It ended up being for the better, our new pediatrition is even better!

  • I work in an office full of mamas with little ones of varying ages.  So if rec's aren't flung at me along with all the other unsolicited advice, I have plenty of people to ask.

I'll probably ask OB too, but probably later, early third tri or so.

I don't know a lot of people locally with young children (1 I think) so I don't have any good recommendation resources.  Also, there is a doctor shortage where I live and am concerned about getting into the good ones.

  • Probably I'll start when I hit 3rd tri.  I know one I'll try is a family practice doctor in town that my friend goes to but that way it's only a 10 or so minute drive as opposed to a 30-45+ drive with a poor sick little kiddo.
  • We did it early in the 3rd tri. Fortunately, we fell in love with the first guy and didn't bother interviewing anyone else. He was starting a new practice and very flexible about letting us come in whenever we wanted... it took only a couple days to arrange a time via email. And I'd suggest having a list of questions prepared ahead of time, but otherwise just be open to what they have to say about their own practice.
  • I never did this. I mean I went online and read some of their bio's but that was about it. I just picked a Dr. that sounded good and that spoke English.

  • Anyone want to post a list of "interview" questions?

Right now, my main questions would be, who do I call in the middle of the night?  How easy is it to get an appt. on short notice?  I am pro-vaccine, but want someone to explain everything well to me so I would be asking about that.  I like doctors that will talk to me, so I guess I would be just looking for a vibe.

I'll probably start around the 3rd trimester. I know some people that have little ones that I can ask for recs and I'll ask my OB.
