cradle cap vs. eczema

Luke has been stratching his cradle cap until it bleeds - I cut his nails really short but you should see him go at this little head.  What's the difference b/t cradle cap and eczema?  Could I be treating this wrong?

Re: cradle cap vs. eczema

  • Mine had both. The cradle cap was like scales on top of the scalp, slightly orange-red in color. To treat it, I would rub olive oil all over their heads, then put on a hat and let it sit for an hour or so. Then take a fine tooth comb and gently scrape off the scales.

The excema is more like pink, dry patches. For those I treat with Aquaphor, since the key is to keep it well moisturized.

    HTH. Poor guy!

  • Madeline had cradle cap, it was yellowish flacky scaly skin on her head, and it didn't seem to be itchy.  We treated it by applying baby oil, letting it sit for ten minutes and then using a baby brush to remove the scales.

Sarah has excema.  This does seem somewhat itchy, but not excessively, but I know from others with it that it can be quite itchy.  Our pediatrician recommended aquaphor lotion, which we put on it twice a day, and it seems to help quite a bit.

What you are describing seems more like excema than cradle cap, but it is hard to tell over the computer.

  • I posted before I read lutzcowgirl's response, but we said almost the exact same thing.  Great minds, right lutzcowgirl?

  • Too funny, cands! I came back to see what others had said and felt like we wrote the same post!

Exactly! You can also try Calendula cream on the cradle cap. Whole Foods sells it but I bet other places do too. That worked for us.
