Maternity Leave

Those who are taking maternity leave and burning all your vacation/PTO. How are you handling the time between when you come back and when you get PTO time again? I can take 12 weeks maternity leave, but that burns all my vacation time and my fiscal year starts again on Sept 1st. So for 8 months I will have no vacation time. Anyone else? What are you doing?

With the baby coming during summer vacation (I'm a teacher), I do not get short term disability or paid maternity leave because it starts from the day of birth. I'll be taking 6 weeks FMLA once school begins, but this will be unpaid. I'm not using any sick days, although I have over 6 weeks worth saved. Sad

I can't take it unpaid : (   I wish I could and save my vacation time.

If you and your employer qualify for FMLA, you are allowed to take it unpaid (unless you prefer not to for financial reasons at home).

But I too will be taking my 12 weeks unpaid, and then I will be working part time, supplementing w/ the leave I have (approximately 10 weeks) leftover.  My leave will re-bank on March 19th, so I don't have as long to wait as you.

  • I'll have to take mandatory PTO during my leave as well - though, my company will let us "borrow" time against what we'll be awarded later that year (even if we haven't earned it yet).  Will they let you do that in January, in case you get sick or need to take care of the baby?

  • My fiscal year is Sept 1 to Aug 31. So anything I take Jan 1 and after would be unpaid and needs approval from the President before taken. I am worried about too many unpaid days to look bad on me after taking 12 weeks.

not entirely true.  your employer can require you to use PTO/sick leave BEFORE you're entitled to go unpaid.

This exactly for me. :( I would rather use completely unpaid leave and keep my sick days, but it is required I use those, plus the 5 they'll extend first. I just hope I don't get sick before I can bank anymore sick days (I earn 1.25 sick days per month I work - so I won't be earning any while I'm off).

  • I too have to use up all my paid time off before I go unpaid.   I am just going to take time off w/ out pay if I need to when I go back.   DH carries the insurance so I don't really have to worry about maintaining full time hrs/ each week.

  • Our vacation/sick/personal days run Jan-Dec, so I lucked out.  I plan on going back to work Jan 3rd so I'll go right in to all my PTO.  Right now it works out perfectly so that I'll get paid for my entire time out.....1 week vacation, 1 week sick time, 8 weeks STD for c/s and 6 weeks NJFLI.  I'm taking 15 1/2 weeks off
