Birthing Class - opinions please!

My DH has asked about taking classes, which completely shocks me, but I figure I should jump at the chance.  Our hospital offers two different ones - one is a full day class on labor and delivery.  The other is a three hour class on newborns (changing, feeding, diapering, etc).  I feel like we might get more out of the newborn class, but was wondering if any of you ladies had taken classes and had any opinions about whether a labor/delivery class might be more useful.  I am fairly clueless on both topics, but have been reading like crazy.

Re: Birthing Class - opinions please!

  • I was going to take the all day L&D class at the hospital, but it was cancelled so we ended up just taking a 2 hour "Moving Through Labor" class that was geared more toward natural childbirth and pain relief.  From what I've heard, the all day hospital classes are a bit of a waste of time, but if your DH is willing, I say go for it.  I was dreading mine because all I could think about was how my DH was going to complain about it.

As far as newborn care, I rented "Laugh and Learn About Newborn Care" from Netflix and we watched it one night the other week.  It was less than an hour and pretty basic, but it got to the point.  I didn't learn anything new, but I think it was good for DH.

  • The all day class was kind of boring but we learned about the hospital's policies anf toured L&D which was nice.
  • We're doing a newborn care class (to see things in person), but also reading the intro from "Caring for your Baby and Young Child" (published by the American Academy of Pediatrics) and Becoming Babywise.  Becoming Babywise was a gift from a couple that has twins that we're close to, and the other book was a gift from a close friend of mine from high school that's now a Pediatrician in another city (only the beginning part of the book is useful for the early part of having a little one but it goes to age 5).   I'm also taking a breastfeeding class and they really want the Dads to be there but DH would have to take a day off of work to do it and he's already supportive so I'm going alone (my choice).

Labor and delivery wise we're taking a class that spans 4 Monday nights (there is an all day option but it conflicts with DH's schedule) that covers hospital policies and a few different types of natural childbirth techniques, but I believe also mentions pain control information for those that choose it.  After talking to someone that only read books for the delivery of her first little one, I'm glad we signed up for the class even though we haven't taken it yet.  For me it just makes me a bit more comfortable knowing more specifics about the hospital I'm delivering at and the class should help with that (I think).  But honestly it's personal preference.  And its worth finding out if it makes DH more comfortable to take the classes or not.  That might make it worth taking them if you weren't considering it otherwise.

For us all three classes was close to $100 total, so it wasn't a huge expense.

  • Thank you all for your input!  I may rent the video you suggest, Natalie.  And I am reading everything I can get my hands on.  If,come late August, I am still thinking about the classes, maybe I will sign up.  At a minimum, I will definitely do a tour of L&D.
