Hi ladies, I've been taking a break from the boards after our last failed IVF a couple months ago and I see there are a lot of new faces around, but I don't really know where else to turn right now. My sister is almost 20 weeks pg and her water broke, following a week or so of on and off bleeding. She had been to L&D last weekend and they had said her cervix was closed. She is back there now, and she and the baby are stable but she is continuing to leak fluid so I guess it is not looking good. I know this is not about me, but I feel very guilty because I was extremely jealous of her pregnancy, and wished she wasn't pg. Now I just feel horrible for what she may be going through in the coming days. Also, I don't know much about this - what the chances are that she could remain pregnant after her water breaking??
I'd appreciate your T&Ps for my family. Thanks ladies and I hope to be in an emotional place where I can rejoin the board again full-time soon.

I'm so sorry. T&P's will be headed her way.
My water broke at 19 weeks, and I was able to make it 3 weeks before infection set in. The doctors were amazed and shocked, so I guess it's rare. My RE told me that if you make it past the first 3 days, your chances increase significantly. I have heard of people making it months without a problem.
Twins born too early at 23 weeks due to incompetent cervix
FET #1, IUI #1, 2, 3, 4 - all BFN
IVF #3 BFP!!! IT'S A BOY! Born July 16th, 2011
FET #2 BFP! Due February 15, 2013
I too have heard of women making it months on strict hospital bedrest. Once your water breaks you are at a greater risk for infection. I will be praying for your family.

Lots of prayers to you and your sister and your family.
It depends if her "water broke", i.e. complete rupture of the membrane, or if she is leaking fluid.
A fluid leak (depending on the size) can heal, or with lots of rest and monitoring, the placenta can make enough amniotic fluid to keep up with the amount being lost and she can continue to incubate her little one. My SIL had this happen (very low fluid due to a possible leak) and with bedrest she went on to have a healthy baby. I hope that either of these two things is true for your sister.
Two things are key for her right now if her cervix remains closed. Preventing an infection in the sac, and minimizing fluid loss, both of which are treated the same...rest and monitoring (possibly antibiotic if they are concerned about an infection). They can also give her medication to stop contractions should they develop, and if she can go longer, they can give steroids to help the baby's lungs develop a little faster.
All the best for a positive outcome.
