When did you start "tummy time"?

my LO is only 3 weeks old but a couple of times a day i put him on his belly for some tummy time. is it too early? when did you start tummy time? any tips? TIA!

  • Gosh, I can't remember exactly that far back, but I think we started pretty early as well. As long as your LO one doesn't mind tummy time it should be okay. I recall my pedi telling us that babies are most likely to enjoy it if they get started on it early.

  • i am pretty sure my pedi said to start it as early as LO would tolerate it.  DD always hated it (until she was able to roll over onto her tummy herself, then she loved it) but the pedi said even just a few minutes each day would help
  • We started really early, too. We put her on her tummy on the Boppy. It's good to start early. :)

  • I started around 3 weeks and just 5-10 minutes/day.  I was wearing her a lot in the fabric wrap carrier (like a Moby)...probably 18-20 hours a day so she had developed some good head control early...I think it helped with her tummy time.  If you're LO is tolerating it then it should be fine...

we did this too.  I was lying on the couch with the boppy on my stomach so he could see my face when he was on it - he seemed to like that best.

  • I think we started that early... You can start as soon as they're born, I think. DD had good head control from the start (she was a fully cooked, week late baby) and so we just put her down or held her on my chest a lot. She LOVED her activity mat, which I started using around 2 months but should have used earlier. We had a pyramid with a mirror on it that we used when she was on her tummy and she LOVED looking at herself! HTH

  • thanks everyone!

mason has really great head control too..and he is soo strong for being only 3 weeks. he loves being on my chest but i'll definitely try the boppy idea. thanks again!

  • our doctor said to start at our first office appt. (5ish days?)  but it could be because Jack already had good head control.

He was not a fan, but wouldn't actually cry.  He would just grunt and kick his feet so much that he would move himself off his mat.  We have it on video - so cute!
