So DH and I have had lots of blood work done to see if there is any reason why I have miscarried twice in a row for no apparent reason.
We went yesterday for the results and RE said DH was fine but that I had a mutated gene from mom and dad that gave me a deficiency. Something about my body doesn't absorb vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. Well these are things I need during a pregnancy. RE can't say or doesn't want to say if this could be related to the two miscarriages.
So I trott my happy butt down to Walgreens and fill a RX for Folgard that includes these vitamins.
Does anyone else have this MTHFR thing?
Carrie
Re: MTHFR - wtf?
I have homozygous MTHFR (two copies of C also from both parents). My Dr prescribed me 4mg of folic acid and a baby aspirin a day for life. I also added in b6&12.
It's debated amongst Dr's whether the folic acid deficiency cause blood clotting or the blood clotting causes the folic acid deficiency. Either way make sure you add baby aspirin as daily thing also.
I don't know that the Dr can really determine what the cause of your m/c (I also had two m/c) were without testing especially if they were early early tri m/c. If they were early tri it could be chromosomal abnormalities which is the cause of most early tri m/c.
Try not to stress about it (I did when I first found out I had it) because as long as you are taking your folgard and baby aspirin you are good to go.
I'm in the same boat, they aren't sure if it's the cause of some of my mc's but it's a start.
Find out what copies you have A and/or C, it makes a difference. I have one strand of the C and am on metanx (different brand of Folgard) for life. I will also start on lovenox injections at transfer with my next FET or if I ever get a BFP on my own and will stay on it through out pg. I have an article saved at work that I can pm you later this week (I won't be in the office until Fri).
Also there are a ton of girls on IF dealing with this, so you can go there for more info too. It was confusing at first and then I felt like I got a pretty good handle on it, good luck and pm if you need anything.
When DH and I were TTC our first, my RE told me that I had MTHFR. I get the hetero/homo, confused. I just remember him telling me that it was the more common one and that it really shouldn't be an issue in regards to me maintaining a pregnancy (I'd had 2 natural mcs before seeing him). He did tell me to take baby aspirin though - I was already taking B6 and B12 on my own and ob/gyn told me to take extra folic acid already.
I was always wondering why we had 2 natural mcs when we first started TTC, but never got a reason because both were at around 5 weeks along and we didn't try to pursue any testing. When I got pg with DD#1 via IVF w/ ICSI I took the B6, B12, extra folic and prenatal the entire pregnancy. I also had to take an iron supplement later on.
But with DD#2 it was very different. We conceived her naturally after a failed IVF. Initially I was taking the prenatal, B6, B12 and extra folic acid, but then I thought to myself that there was really no reason to be taking all those pills since I wasn't advised to do so with the 2nd pregnancy - and I was sick of taking them. I stopped taking everything but the prenatal and DD #2 was just perfect when she was born.
Hey Carrie, I have no experience with MTHFR, but wanted to say that I hope learning this will help get you on track for a healthy full-term pregnancy.
(((((((hugs))))))) and best wishes!

I learned a lot from this topic...that's one thing I haven't exp.
For you, I guess it's better you know and are taking the right vitamins for a healthy pg. Getting news like this stinks but you are on your way to being a mom.
Chicken~ thanks for the information. I sent a PM back to you.
Thanks Ladies for all the information. I have C677T/C677T. I'm taking Folgard twice a day along with a pre-natal and baby aspirin.
I knew I could count on this board to help educate me.
I know I am a little late in responding to this, but I have the exact same gene mutation as you do, and (so far) it hasn't been a problem for me. I take a prenatal, a Folgard, and a baby aspirin, and all my ultrasounds looked good. I am glad you got so many responses. I feel like when I found out I had it, nobody had heard of it! Also, it is nice to know before you get pregnant so the extra vitamins can help prevent neural tube defects. I didn't know I had it until 8 weeks, when it is a bit too late for that.
Good luck!
