Eat it or toss it?

How long is Buffalo sauce good?  Because I really want to put it on my mac & cheese (yeah... I'm definitely entering the 2nd trimester).  The expiration date says December 2011 but does that mean even if has been opened... it was opened and has been sitting in my fridge since Super Bowl Sunday way back in Jan/Feb.

Re: Eat it or toss it?

  • I would not eat it, pregnant or not.  Sauce that's been opened goes bad a lot sooner.  I like to live on the wild side but I wouldn't do that.

  • I say eat it! It hasn't expired yet! And I am pretty sure it has some preservatives to make it last that long. Also, things like that hardly degrade when stored in the cold environment in the refrigerator. I am sure you will be fine. Don't forget to shake it up though since it may have settled. :)

  • I would eat it--we always have buffalo sauce in our fridge and I've never seen it go bad, but that being said I would pour a little on a plate give it a whiff, make taste a tiny bit before you add it to your mac n cheese (if it doesnt taste right you wouldnt want to ruin your whole meal lol) Plus buffalo sauce is so acidic I think you would be okay

  • Um, if I give it a whiff I am likely to lick the plate clean!

  • Seriously, I've had pizza sauce go bad in a jar in the fridge after a month or two.  It's been almost 6 months......I wouldn't risk it.

  • I'd smell it first and look to see what the ingredients are as well. If I'm correct, buffalo sauce should have lots of vinegar in it, making it have a long life. Sniff!
  • Yeah I definitely wouldn't do it with pizza/spaghetti sauce due to tomatoes molding, and I think that actually goes bad in a week or less in the fridge (if it's been openened.  I wouldn't do it with something like dressing or tartar sauce either, things with mayo, egg, milk, etc.  But as for buffalo sauce, I googled and it seems that it is good for awhile... I guess due to it basically being vinegar and spices and those things lasting forever.

  • According to stilltasty.com, you can leave an opened bottle in the fridge for 5 years.  The date on the bottle is a best by date and not an expiration date.  As long as it smells ok, go for it.

  • Totally unrelated, but now this post has "Buffalo gals, won't you come out tonight" going through my head.  Yikes.

  • It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to toss it.  I would eat it until the expiration date for sure.
