TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

S/O baby names (part 2 of 2)

It depresses me that I'm probably not going to love my kids' names.

DH & I have verrrrry different tastes in names. We SCOURED baby name websites in the 8 short weeks that I was pg.

We agreed on NOTHING.

I know we'll find something that we both "like", but it upsets me that I probably won't love my baby's name. It upsets me that there are so many names that I do love but will never be able to use b/c dh hates them.

  • I bet you'll find something you both really love.  And if that is really impossible, you are the one that is going to have to do the heavy lifting, so I think he can deal with "liking" a name you love.  Wink

  • We are totally the same way. The only name we have ever both liked is Hannah and it is too popular to use now imo. Our kids could quite possibly be nameless or have a name one of us doesn't really love.

My DH actually seriously considered the "you name the first kid whatever you want, I name the second."

    ....and I seriously considered it.

  • You might be surprised! We picked Christopher for DS to honor my FIL, and it wasn't a name I would have EVER picked otherwise... ever.  But, since we chose it, it definitely grew on me daily - and then once DS was born and added his own personality to it (and nicknames - we call him Topher :)), I find myself looking at the name completely differently, and I'm much more in love with it than I thought I ever would be.

  • I just kept saying the name I liked over and over until it grew on him.I just said Those are nice names, but I love Rosemary and he'd make a face and talk about demon babies.  Repeat until he stopped the demon babies and stopped the faces and started calling LO Rosemary. I'm kinda persistent and manipulative like that. I think I'll let him choose the MN though.

  • Our boy name is pretty much set in stone, but the girl name is where you and I are alike.  DH and I can not agree on a girl name for anything.  I, too, am afraid that I will have to settle on a name just so that we have something when the baby is born.

I like Melanie, Julia, and Charlotte.  He likes Anastasia and Heidi.  Ugh! Our last name has 10 letters in it, so I would like something not too long, but he doesn't think that is even a problem to be concerned with.

My thing is I want a name that will look good on construction paper in kindergarten, a college application and letterhead -- so something that will age well.

  • We agree 100% on a boy name (Hubs middle name, family name that died out.)

Girls names? It was like vetovetovetovetoveto. Liesl is the ONLY name we both like and Hubs is still not sold on it.

  • My plan at this point is to try to trick DH into thinking HE came up with the name.

For example, I LOVE the name Molly, he told me he hates it, so I might say something like, "well, of all the names you like, I think  Molly is the only one I even remotely like. So I guess Molly it is."

    We'll see.

  • My tried and true tricks:

Throw in a bunch of your "wildest fantasy" names: names that you like but that are too out there for you to actually give to a baby. When your husband hears Josephine (one of my faves) in a line-up that includes Isolde, Agnes, Harriet, and Philomena it's going to sound a lot better :)

Two: repetition. After years of talking about names, DH has become so desensitized to a few of mine that he forgot he didn't like them at first and started volunteering them himself when we come up with lists.

I do both of these tricks. I loved the name Madison for a long time and dh hated it. But it grew on him, of course then everyone began using the name.
