Bridesmaid dress fitting-what to do

As you know I have been worried about my sisters wedding which is in May and getting PG. I am the Matron of Honor and I am hoping I will definitely be pregnant but of course that may bring on a dilemma with the dress. She just picked the dress out and I have to go for a fitting by the end of the month.  I dont know how I would ever wear this dress if I am PG. What do I do when I go? I want to go alone so I can talk to the girl who fits me and tell her we are trying. What do you think?

Re: Bridesmaid dress fitting-what to do

  • That one does look tough, I would talk to the girl who is fitting you and see if she has any suggestions.  Maybe there is a dress that looks similar that could be your back up plan just in case.  I can't believe you have to get fitted 7 months early!  Even if you aren't KU a person can gain or loose a lot in that amount of time!

  • That's a tough one.  Is there any reason you have to go so early for a fitting?  Does your sister know that you all are trying?
  • I ran into this for my cousin's wedding a couple years ago... when you order the dress just tell the person you order from that you may or may not be pregnant at the time of the wedding, they will probably order it a size or two larger than you need.  It is ALWAYS easier to take it in than let it out.

In my case, I only ended up being 7-8 weeks pregnant at the time of the wedding.

Hopefully you will get pregnant soon!

  • I am actually in the same situation.  Except the wedding is in June and I am the matron of honor as well.  But, she's my best friend and was at the hospital when I delivered my twins early.  She actually said I could order in January that way if i am pregnant I can just get a larger size and have it tailored.  I think the dress your sister pick could work.  Whats the largest size the skirt comes in and the top.  If they go pretty big then find out when the latest you could order would be and how long it would take to come in.  Pls. talk to your sister I am sure she would understand.  GL.

  • The dress is very pretty, but no you can't wear it if your pg.  I would ask if there is a dress that is a similar cut (v-neck) with the accent under the bodice, that has am empire waist.  It's worth a shot I think I've seen them before.
  • Oh, and there is no dress style 522, is it 552?
  • That would be a tight fit!  I would definitely at least call the store and talk to them, or go in like you said.  If you got pg now, you'd be super pg by the time the wedding came.  I had a friend whose sister found out she was pg right when they were going to order the dresses and the bride let her wear an empire dress that was really flowy and billowy.  Maybe your sister would let you do that?  It's not unheard of to have a different dress for the MOH.  Plus, if you did that, you could wear the dress if you were super pg or just starting to show.

  • Ugh girls. I dont know what to do. I mean if I got PG this month or even by December, I can not wear it. It is one thing if I dont get PG till closer to the wedding, then I can pull it off if I am under 12 weeks. But I am being positive here that i am going to be big and pregnant. :)

My sister does know we are trying and she has a huge wedding party and the woman said since its so big, we all have to have it ordered by the end of October so they all come in together and from the same dye.

  • I was in a wedding last august. The bride wanted the order for the dresses in by the end of february, so 6 months in advance, and we were ttc.

I ended up ordering the dress a size or 2 up (they suggested an 8 or 10, I ordered a 12). It probably would have worked out great since I was supposed to be 18 weeks by then, but since I wasn't, I just had it taken in and it worked fine.

    Good luck!

  • I think you should ask your sister, or the bridal store, if you can wait to order.  Any wedding I've been in, you only had to order 4 months in advance.  However I am in a wedding in December and the dress was being discontinued so I ordered it like 10 months ago. I talked to the fitting lady and she told me how many inches can be let out or taken in for each additional size.  So then I ordered it 2 sizes up, but Im not pregnant yet so I will just have it taken in.

Oh and everyone I  have talked to said you can alter about anything for a pregnant belly.  I mean I saw a girl in a straight satin dress that was altered for her (8 mo. pg) and she looked great.  They just used the other girls extra fabric and put it in the side seams. I don't see this dress being a problem unless you are 7-9 months.  GL

  • Thanks Tara. If I do get pregnant this month or by December, I will be between 7 and 9 months but who knows. We will see what happens. Thanks for your advice though!

  • If you don't have to order until the end of the month you should know if you are pregnant this month, right?  If you aren't pregnant this month you would be due next August, which would make you about 30 weeks?  or there around, it is possible you wouldn't be that huge at that point.  I would just order 2 sizes larger.

  • One of the girls I grew up with was a bm in a wedding and had a very similar dress to wear. She was 40wks at the wedding. She's normally a size 1-2 and ordered a 16 and just took in the boobs and under the belly and ended up being very cute. Also to give her a little length to the top for her belly they bought the matching sash/shawl and just added that to the bottom of the top. No one ever knew, it looked like the rest...just hugely pg. Gl!

  • I'm in the exact same boat! ?Also MOH in May and hoping to be pregnant, but having no idea what stage I'd be at the time. ?I couldn't find 522. ?Was it 552? ?If so, I don't think it would be too bad. ?When we went shopping last week, we have the option of ordering extra fabric so that panels can be sewn into the sides if extra room is needed. ?Also the one we picked comes in a long skirt, but we are doing them at knee length so we'll have extra fabric there.

One recommendation I also received was to order 1-2 sizes up. ?It'd be easier to take it in than let it out. ?My bride has also been really understanding and has said that if I have to wear a different dress because I'm too pregnant, that's ok. ??

  • Welcome to my world...except I had to get the fitting done in May (about 2 weeks after I delivered and still had some baby weight) and the wedding isn't until March. I assumed we might get pg in the first 2-3 cycles of TTC and that I might be 7-8mos pg in March.  Boy was I wrong! So now I have a gianormous dress and might (if I am lucky) be about 5mos pg and not showing that much. Argh! I am going to have to find a great tailor to take in that much material.
