Popular Names

I should start by saying I have an Avery, Jackson, and Ella as nices and nephew, and I love them dearly. And I think their names are super cute. I really do.

But cheese and rice, are there going to be any children NOT named Avery/Jackson/Ella in their generation?

Everytime I see a birth announcement or a "We've Got A Name!" post on Baby Names, these are the names. Also, I saw THREE "what do you think of Scarlett?" posts in one day over there. How do people even consider a name that has become so trendy as to become painful? Bella, anyone?

The minute I realized a name had broken the top ten, it would be out of the running. I don't care if I love the name. Don't do this to your kid.

(To be fair, I do think my SILs were on the cutting edge of this. The names weren't as popular when the kids were born.)

Re: Popular Names

  • Um, I think you need to add Jacob, Isabella, and Edward to your list, b/c OMG the Twilight phase has invaded baby names.  Gag.

Don't get me wrong I love the names Jacob and Isabella, I just am sick of Twilight.

    Ugh.

It's just...seriously? People cannot come up with a name that forty-seven gazillion other babies are going to have that year? It's not like you can't check on a name's popularity on the Interwebz. There are just a "few" sites devoted to this.

It's lazy and unbending. I don't know why it bugs me so much, but it really does.

  • choosing a name is soooo difficult.  nathan wasn't named for the first 2 days of his life.  i just couldn't decide and didnt' want a popular name either.  however i see alot more nathan's now.  Indifferent

  • I'm in the middle - I'm not the "Shiloh" or "Apple" naming type but I'm really not a fan of the super popular, 'trendy' names.

That being said, when I was little I KNEW I would have three children and name them Madison, Morgan and Madeleine... I was smart see, cause Morgan and (maybe) Madison could be boy names, too.

The only name DH didn't hate was Madeleine... which is unfortunately quite popular right now.

  • I mean, I am not going to name my kid "Chair" or something.

DH is super set on Luke for a boy, and it's in the top 50 (#48 last year). I'm okay with that.

    But Top 10? No way.

And this from a girl who wanted an Aidan and an Emma, wayyyyy before SATC and Friends ruined those names for everyone.

Yup, same here.  5 years ago we both loved Jack and Grace - today they are completely out of the running.  It makes me sad though, because I do love those names.

  • You will be very happy to know that Allison is actually my top girl's name!  I don't mind popular names, but I don't like the trendy ones.  I think Andrew is still pretty high up there, but that's my favorite boy name and being in the top 10 wouldn't make me not use it.

It IS a most excellent name, I have to say. :)

  • I used to love Emma and Bella until they became the only names in the universe.

DS's name is Henry: good name, nice showing on the list but not TOO popular.

  • I was going to use the name Grace, but it's in the top 20 and that changed my mind.  My name was the number 1 name the year I was born.  I like my name just fine, but I hated being Jen number 2.

Then again, I also hate made up names...

  • The made up names are the worst.  Why would you make your kid constantly have to tell people how to spell or pronounce your name?  The playground is tough enough why give kids something else to make fun of?

  • I agree for the most part, but I also think the list is deceiving.  For example, DS's name is Christopher - which has been in the top 10 for pretty much ever - and I've never met another baby named Christopher.

I guess I'm all for naming your baby whatever you (general you) want (with the full understanding that I will make fun of you if that name sucks :-P) but you have NO right to complain about the name being super popular, or your kid having to be Jacob G. for the rest of your life - since you willingly did that to him.  KWIM?

  • For me if it's just a popular name, I don't really care and would still use it if it's a name we really loved.  If the reason the name is popular is because of some Twilight-like instance or the latest teenage pop star, then I would rethink it.

And I can guarantee you none of my babies (look at that confidence) will have the name Jackson, Ella or Avery.

  • I have to love a name.  Period.  I don't much care if it's popular, to be honest. . . I just have to love it and it has to have meaning.

That said, I wouldn't ever name my kid after the Twilight twinkies because, well, good lord that's loathesome.

  • DH is in the camp of 'if I love it, I don't care how popular it is'. I'm in the camp of refusing to give a top 10 name to my kid. My name is fairly unique and it was nice growing up because I was never confused with anyone else. And I agree, I'm totally not at all in favor of the made up names (and I'm not a fan of any of the ones ending in -aden either).

  • I have this list of names that I love and I feel like all of my FH friends are using them up.... Damn my body! I wish I could stay pregnant so I could actually "claim" one of my fav names.

I don't like made up names either, and I'm also not a fan of having my kids name listed in the top 10. Some of my fav names: For a boy, Charlie or Graham and for a girl Molly or Norah.

I feel like a lot of you, I want to love a name without it being trendy.  If the name I love becomes trendy, I don't know what I will do.  I'm secretly dying right now because my brother is expecting.  They haven't shared the first name, but I already know they are using the middle name we want, but it is a middle name... that's okay right?

Emma is my great grandmothers name. I have wanted a little girl named Emma my whole life, my doll babies were always Emma.

I remember watching that fateful episode of Friends and bawling because I knew my special not at all popular name had just be ruined. Lame, but everytime I see a new Emma I secretly give the parents the finger.

    Yes This is awesome.

And my 2 cents...I'm not a big fan of popular names either. But I agree, if I LOVE a name, if its popular or not, I will use it. But, usually I like unusual names (not made up ones, just different). I have my girl name picked out and it isnt very popular now, but I can see it becoming popular. Sooo I REALLY hope I can "claim" it before it hits the top baby names list!!!

And I would never ever name my kid after a Twilight character! Or any character for that matter. It has nothing to do with the fact that I loathe Twilight....

  • I won't give a name if it's in the top 100. I'd prefer it to not be in the top 200.

My favorite girls name right now isn't even in the top 1000. And yet it's totally familiar, easy to spell and pronounce, classic, full of literary and historical precedent, and not made up or confusing.

    I win :)

  • I agree.  In my sister's class there were 3 Sarahs.  My mom had desperately wanted to name my sister Sarah but was so glad dad said no when she found out how popular it was.  Cooper is one of my top names and I hate that it's getting more and more popular because now I'm not sure I want to use it after all.

Notice I used the words "had always planned" up there.  My husband hates all things Twilight and now refuses to give our son his name b/c of Edward Cullen.

  • I like the different but not you-neek names, but DH is really traditional. Our boy name is after our dad's, no debate, but all the girls names I like he's not into. And one of the ones we did like a lot - Rosalie - went out the window with the Twilight naming craze. Sigh.
